Hi. I'm a Pinay living in the US and new to forums. I am interested to know if any of the moms here live "abroad" too and if they have started to teach their child(ren) Filipino and how they do it.

Ginagawa nila, kinakausap nila as as much as possible ng Tagalog ang kanilang anak sa bahay.

Naiintindihan nya pareho.

So mahirap din syempre yung kalagayan nya, diba?

Good thing,

That way, napipilitang mag-Tagalog ang bata.
That is one suggestion, effective daw according to them.

Karma to you for your suggestions. Salamat sa iyong pagsagot sa tanong ko. I'll reply in English since I think faster in English. I'll try some of your suggestions to my children smile. My American husband thinks we have a few good excuses for not teaching our children the Filipino language since one of their parents is American and there are very few Filipinos living in our town who still speak Filipino fluently (me included). I have even met several Fil-Ams who were born & raised in the suburbs by Filipino parents who do not speak nor understand Filipino. I have only been living here for five years but I have already forgotten a lot of Filipino words that is why I am not confident about talking to my children in Filipino. I was hoping there would be other Pinays like me out there who have found other means of exposing their children to the Filipino language.

Hello twoAngels! I'm also Pinay living here in US. Surely, I will teach my girls to speak Filipino, I'm already starting it while they are still young because learning a second language at a young age is natural and effortless. And like you my husband told me that I don't really need to teach them Filipino since we are living here in US, and if I really want to I have to wait till they are fluent in English 'coz he thinks it will cause them speech delay. But I disagree with that since speech-language problems are less likely to occur when both languages are introduced early. There are greater possibilities of problems if children are introduced to a second language during the preschool years after another language was used exclusively.

I understand you are not confident enough in teaching your children in Filipino 'coz you hardly speak Filipino yourself anymore. But still, you know better than them. If it will be hard on you, well, you don't really need to teach them to speak like filipinos, just introduce some words to them so they will be familiar to it 'coz somehow they are part Filipino. Wouldn't be nice if your kids speak or understand more than one language? It will not just benefit them to be bilingual but also boosts their self-confidence and broadens their outlook to different cultures & expressing themselves. Asking for any means of exposing your children to the Filipino language??? You already have it, you only need yourself & your Little Reader. Make your own category files in tagalog and include it in your playlist, & talk to them in tagalog. Everytime I talk to my girls, I repeat it in tagalog. If you'd forgotten some Tagalog words, refreshen your mind by watching any Filipino movies or shows, you can find lots of it in youtube. You would be the best means of exposing your children to different language, an invaluable gift that would equip that child long term for survival in a multitude of environments.

hi ladies, pinay din ako living in the middle east, UAE, im married to a Jordanian.
my hubby requested me to prioritized first teaching arabic and english before Tagalog, his reason is quite rational, he said that it will be very difficult to pronounce words in arabic if he does not learn it from now. i speak a little arabic buy it still does not sound like one. kase yung "K" and "H" sa kanila over emphasis kung bigkasin like, its weird i know.
but my son hears me often speaking in Tagalog on the phone so i guess even without me really sitting down to teach him the language, he will eventually learn how to speak it.

(sorry guys, i have to type in english kse ang bagal ko sa tagalog typing Wink )

My 3-yr old boy is now talking in English, minsan nakakagulat kasi nakakapagsalita na rin sya ng Tagalog at his very young age.
Worry lang ako ngyon kasi he needs to learn and study Arabic when he go to school this September (which I think one of the required subject in any school here in Dubai) Parang lalabas nga dalawa kaming mag-aaral para maturuan ko sya in case my exams or activities sa school. LOL

Very well said sheeberi.

And for those na medyo may alam sa showbiz sa Pinas, remember Ogie's Michelle and Dayanara Torres? Michelle is Australian while Dayanara is Puerto Rican. Pero ang tatas managalog! Galing!
Natuto kagad.

Noong college ako, may mga classmates akong
Muslim. They told me na napakahirap talaga ng Arabic.

i-translate ang document from Arabic to English.

Galing!

Yes. Yes and yes. If we have the chance, we should teach our kids to be bilingual. My husband at first doesn't want me to teach my baby filipino. He believed that this will confuse the baby while learning the primary language. And he doesnt see the point of learning filipino since majority of the Filipino speaks English. Filipinos are so educated that almost everyone understand english. However, teaching kid a second language always have an advantage.
