Hi queriquita,

I'm not sure where in the US you are, but I would highly recommend that you find a good Soroban teacher in your area if at all possible. I personally teach in NY, but there are a lot of benefits to having a caring and experienced teacher and classroom.

Of course I agree with you that probably  the best to learn abacus is to attend classes given by a good teacher.
I would like to ask you as a person, who teaches abacus to a younger children:
What requirements for a child to be able to attend Abacus Class?
Like you see, here on Brillkids forum we are very enthusiastic  , even parents of 2 year olds want to start it 

But what skills a child has to master in order to be ready to start learning abacus?

Hi Nadia,

Well, for my school the requirements are being able to read and write numbers between 0 - 9. and the ability to stay seated for a couple minutes at a time. Usually this means that students start at around age 4. Some kids can start earlier, while sometimes I think some kids need more time before they're ready to start. But this is all based on the fact that I have very small classes ( 5 students or less) and that with younger students I'll usually take them on as private tutors until they're ready to start in a regular class. As a parent working with just their own child, you may be able to work with your own kids at an earlier age. Sometimes it's the opposite, and kids just can't get themselves to listen to their parents for extended periods of time but are completely ready to start a class with me.
To be perfectly frank, I believe that a dedicated and determined parent is the most important aspect in a child's education. If the parent can stick through the tough times without quitting, I've always been able to teach their children so far.
