i was wondering how you would go about flashing what you listed?  any ideas?  i'm going to start with the cartesian plane, as suggested by doman/evan thomas institute, in july/august, but was hoping you might have an idea how to introduce these ideas to a child under 2?
thanks again for all your great suggestions!
the doc

Ha Ha - I have NO idea!  I was actually thinking I better hurry up and contact the Evan Thomas Institute before I get there - as we are nearly done with division after this week and on to all the other stuff......  I'd like to stay with dots for as long as possible but I might have to introduce numbers simply because I will have exhausted what I could figure out on my own.  If you talk to them let me know what they say..... what is the cartesian plane?  Please explain!

The x and y axis.  Your child has to understand positive and negative numbers, and integers.  Can't to this with dots...  I have been using LM for learning numbers and it's working well. Before we move to just numbers I'm going to get a big number line mat to put on the floor so she get the concept of positive and negative.
I bought 3 books on teAching math from the Evan Thomas institute.  Wow!  It is a bit overwhelming.  I'm using it as a guide as to what to teach.  I'm going to be calling for help soon I'm sure.
Let's keep in touch with our progress!

Could you tell me more about the books - the titles and what age child they are for?  Are these books only available to those who have gone to the course?  Have you attended the course?
I would absolutely like to know more.  I think I have a good start with my daughter but was a bit late with my son - who is going to be 3 now.  He's interested when I show his sister the cards he always says, "Mama show me my numbers."  but then when I show him - he loses interest right away - I'm assuming because he can't see the dots.  I'd like to know how to work with children once they are past being able to see the dots if you are a bit late starting.

Yes, please let's keep in touch.

Well, first of all...
if your son is 3 you're NOT LATE!!!  just the fact that you are working with him is fabulous!!karma to you for that! big grin
as far as the books go, when i called, i explained that i needed help with the math b/c i've been using the doman book and we are almost finished with it and wanted to continue but to do it right!  she was VERY nice and sent me the whole catalog of all the subjects to make bit cards with.  about 1/2 of the subjects i thought were ridiculous, but the other 1/2 ithought were fabulous!  like 6 volumes of greek and latin prefixs to flash... how cool is that!  talk about being ready for the SAT yes
anyway, i bought all 3 "math for Mothers".  the first one is referenced in the other volumes, so you kind of have to get it, but i didn't get much out of it, considering i already did the book... but it is interesting.  it does go into more detail and it talks about the importance of a number line, etc.  it would be great if you got the books (they give you a discount if you buy all 3).  say you know the gal from LA and she told you to buy them.
as far as the classes there, i have the 4 DVDs that show about 1 hr. of each class.  they are good but VERY basic.  most of us on this forum are way past it... they show you how to flash and make bits...
but there is another class they offer as the next step if you have already taken the first class.  i would really like to take that now that my girl is through the books and going strong.  i'd like to keep going with everything that we are doing, but don't want to spend $1,200 plus airfare, food, hotel, etc. for a week class that would be worthless to me.  as i keep calling to ask questions about the program i'll ask if they will let me attend this advanced class...  maybe by then i won't need it and can buy more bits/supplies with the $$ i save  LOL
anyway, that's the scoop on that.
i also found (from you.. thanks!) those 2 math programs you wrote about on the web.  i've attached the early learning (ages 2-5) assessment test to find out where you child is.  i thought this forum would like it b/c it can give everyone an idea of where there child is, what kinds of things they should be teaching/flashing, etc.  it was an eye opener for me, as some of this stuff i had never thought about!  just another tool for those who are teaching math/shapes/etc.  they have other assessment tests on the sight as well (free downloads).
good luck everyone!

hi heath!
the two programs i looked into were Shiller Math and Dr. Jones Geniuses.  i don't have the link on hand, you can easily find them through a google search.  the assessment test if from Shiller.
i just spent about 2 hours on the phone with dr. jones himself and was VERY IMPRESSED!  he has a PhD in education specializing in accelerated learning and is very up on the subject.  he answered all my questions about doman/shichida... a WEALTH of information.  he GETS it... and us  yes   so i think he is right up everyone's alley.  and the nice thing is this is something to do while you're doing LM/LR.  it just goes further.  the REALLY nice thing is that you can take online classes with HIM, so if you have any questions about your teaching techniques, his program, etc.  he can answer all your questions!  wow!  that's what sold me.  i know there are times when i just need some guidance from an expert...

i have decided to do his program.  i'll let you know how that goes.
take a look and tell us what you think!

Hi Doc

Thanks for sharing.  I checked out the web sites briefly and they are very interesting.

Keep us posted on how the program is going

Heath.

I'm also looking Dr Jones' program. Like I said earlier we are doing Math U See, but we did 17 of the 30 lessons 3.5 months. I like that his thought on my is that it should not take 5-6 years to learn basic math. And that kids learn to do mental math. I don't want my son to be terrified of divison like I am. I have someone from there calling me back on Monday. I haven't decided yet.

Do they go in parallel with LR/LM? At what age would you start the program and how is it schedule?

hi there!
sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you.  my mom is really sick, so i'm not online as much as a normally am...
in any event, depending upon how old your child is, i would get about 2/3 the way through LM/LR before starting dr. jones math.  the reason is, you really work on learning the 44 different sounds of english as well as work on learning numbers 1-20, and addition /subtraction with a number line (no dots)  and then work from there.  the youngest age he recommends is 2, but because of doman, LR/LM and everything else, we have started early (15 mo.)  i'm not pushing it or doing it as intensely as he recommends, but she is picking it up fast.  we're also doing LR/LM for sight words.  seems to be going well as she can recite the alphabet and knows almost all of the sounds including long and short vowels, hard and soft c.  we're just now working on the double vowel sounds like the oo look, ph of phesant, etc.  and she is 16 mo.  i'm impressed with the program.  and like i said he is always available for guidance, etc.
worth the $200 for sure!  also, it keeps going.  until they are like 16 if you want.  that's good, too!
good luck!
xoxo
