Check out sparklebox.com when you need some Printables like the socks mentioned above smile

I don't intend to start a controversy or derail this thread, we can start a new one if needed, but I do not use sparklebox. To each their own, but just so you are making a fully informed decision here is an article about the site and it's creator. http://www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storycode=6041853

Okay!
So I somehow just noticed that there is yet another toddler math thread!

I will TRY to be useful as I seem to be using at least a majority of the math programs in question...

If I had to choose JUST ONE of the various math programs and manipulatives we incorporate into our daily play? ....hands down, Right Start!

We LOVE much of what JONES GENiUSES has to incorporate, as it got us started and has a fantastic program for speed reading. Memorization of information, and advanced skills...

Unfortunately, at a young age, Alex seemed to be memorizing arithmetic facts rather than understanding them...so we have switched to a more RightStart approach, with JonesGeniuses supplement!

So...
I can completely commiserate with a fear of an abacus! Weird how kids develop random fears!   BUT! HAVE you tried all the options?!

First, with enough proper exposure, I strongly believe that almost all little ones will become accostomed to the RS abacus!  Also, the RS program has lots of beginning programming without an abacus!!!
If they absolutely will not Try the regular abacus? Try the digital version. If you have an IPad, RS has an abacus app! This has A completely different feel than an abacus, and might help him get ready for a proper abacus....
If he still isn't liking it, be assured..you absolutely can do RS with other manipulatives until he is ready for an Abacus...

RightStart has an app

Thank you so much Korrale and Mandabplus3 for suggesting the ixl website (www.ixl.com). And thank you to Mandab for giving more information on the site. I appreciate it so much.

Questions, please.

1). The IXL site is very thorough (as Mandab mentioned) and contains the math curriculum requirements for several countries. Is there a comparable site for reading, writing, etc? Please. I've been very impressed with ixl contents, and was wondering whether there are comparable sites like those for other subjects.

2). Mandab, you mentioned that you've had great success with it. Did you have to sign on to the site to get more resources? Are there advantages to signing on? And are there advantages to paying cash? I noticed there was a section where people pay for several types of membership.

3). As you mentioned, the site is mostly good for practice of previously known concepts. Do you know if the site (or any other one) sells books for which the child could read, master the book, and come to practice the sums. What I mean is this: for example, the UK math  curriculum for year 1 could require mastery of so and so concept. Are the corresponding books which parents could study with their kids before they come to practice the sums? Or is that where Marshmallow Math and MathStart books come in?

Thank you so much for your responses.

Thank you everyone! It seems like Rightstart is the way to go. I plan on eventually incorporating Jones Geniuses though. If I add JG in 6 months, do you think this is okay? Or is that too long? I just don't know when I'd be able to afford it.

And thanks, kerileanne99, for the suggestion of a digital abacus! I didn't think of that. I think the my son wil be  fine with the digital abacus. It's probably just the noise (when the abacus shakes) that scares him.

Can you recommend which Rightstart kit I should begin with? I see that there is a basic and deluxe kit. The deluxe starter kit is a bit expensive, around $200. If I have to spend that amount, I was wondering if I could just buy the basic kit and the downloadable JG. This way I will have both programs. What do you think?

@mizzchrissee

I read a thread on their yahoo group sometime ago that you can just purchase the basic kit and then add the missing items from here:

http://www.learningresources.com/category/teachers/shop+by+category/manipulatives/math.do

Another alternative is to subscribe to the yahoo group and see who can sell you a used kit for much cheaper: http://rightstartmath.com/home-school/forums

For a 2 y old toddler, it is recommended to start with level A. You can also take a placement test here: http://rightstartmath.com/home-school/placement-test

Mizzchrissee-
I definitely think this depends upon how many math manipulatives you already have available!

Okay, so a cost/priority breakdown.
If I had to start all over again, and choose only those programs most useful based upon cost/value, what would I choose priority-wise...
Would definitely go for the RS basic kit, and spend the remainder of the cash buying Marshmallow Math book and the EuroTalk app from the App Store!
If you have any money left over, buy the MathTacular DVDs (or even just the 1st one!), and depending on how many manipulatives you currently have, purchase the manipulatives kit...

Wait a few months and save up to buy the EL kit from the digital JG kit, connecting literacy with math, reading, and memorization

Again, totally based upon my OWN opinion and experience with ONE child! Maybe others can recommend a breakdown based upon their experiences with multiple kiddos?...

@ Keri,

What about Singapore Math? Are the concepts in the Early Bird books included in the RS Level A?

I think it is very hard to choose one math program as your child might not be ready for what you choose for him. That is why many of us ended trying various math programs  smile
I would try to use all free resources first and get inspiration from blogs, use math placemats and iPad apps.
We really like MEP math now.

Kerileanne, I am writing from Europe. The eurotalk app maths 3-5 and 3-4 is free in the app store here. Were you talking about this app? What exactly is the name of the app please? Thanks in advance

Sorry for the confusion regarding the EuroTalk App!

Yes, you can download the Math, 3-5 app for free- however, it only comes with one topic for free.  So then it will ask if you want to purchase the other topics either one-by-one or purchase all topics together-this is the $9.99 price!

Thanks for reminding me about Mathtacular. I am interested in that DVD also. I see that there is a Mathtacular kit, too. Does anyone have experience with this kit?

I understand parents buying many different kits. I would, too, but money is tight right now. I'm a stay at home mom and I'm expecting another baby in November. Since my husband is the only one working, we have to save some money for the baby. Everyone knows how expensive those little ones are!! Lol

So it seems I will buy the Rightstart basic A kit first. I will also try to buy my son a math DVD. He already has the Leapfrog 'MathAdventure to the Moon,' but it's too advanced for him. So Mathtacular might be what I need.

I have a few counting and math apps on my iPad. I also show him counting videos on YouTube. In the future, I might incorporate more/other math programs (maybe in December, for Christmas) . Hopefully this will be enough to teach him for now! I'm excited! smile

I do indeed have the MathTacular manipulatives set-through a complete fluke! I ordered the videos, and the company sent me someone else's order by mistake --the ENTIRE MathTacular package! Better yet, when I phoned to let them know, they just allowed me to keep it.  Hooray!

So we haven't used but a couple of things because we already had most of the items included...but, it seems to be a very-well rounded set, and is a GREAT deal if you don't already have manipulatives. Plus, the kit mirrors the DVDs, so the kiddos can have hands on participation...it also comes with a DVD of real-world math, which is quite helpful.

One time when I visited our local teacher supply store I did a general pricing of the items included in the kit versus prices for those or very similar items--it really is a pretty good deal, as to buy all of the items separately you would spend a lot more buying more than you needed or partial kits to get those items you need!

One other option you might find helpful:
I only bought the RS A Manual, worksheets, and the printed appendices (they are sent on tagboard, so it was a convenience for me not to print them all), and of course, the AL Abacus.  Oh, also the RS card games! A must have...
If you buy the Those RS items and the MathTacular kit, you will have everything you need to get started for months, the cheapest option. (you will eventually need a little plastic clock and coins)

Anyway, just a thought...hope it helps!
