Discussing video
January 10, 2009

The Suzuki approach was developed in Japan by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in the mid 20th Century.

He believed that every child, if properly taught, was capable of a high level of musical achievement.

His philosophy was that if every child has the inborn ability to learn their native language, then they
also have the ability to learn and become proficient on a musical instrument. Begin children early and
excite their own inborn joy of music.

The musical initiation is a major challenge for educators, and even more if your intention is to
cover the learning of the basic concepts of height and duration of sound. This explains why only a much smaller percentage of students enjoy the benefits of a music education practice, systematic and progressive.

This is a method that stems from the observation the author makes the world of children, and from that
look sensible, takes the elements that capture the interest of children to reformulate the initial musical education.

From the perspective of the game and creating partnerships that demolished whole difficulty of teaching and learning of music, ensuring that all children will wake up the interest and taste for musical practice and gradual understanding of the concepts, elements and symbols of themselves their language.

I agree the random colors would be visually chaotic.  I suppose other companies have other philosophies.  In any event, Cristofori will very shortly be coming out with some note flash cards that correspond to the lessons on the DVD.  If you have ordered, you will be emailed when the product becomes available.  It is another way to reinforce the note lessons.

I'm happy to hear about the flashcards with the color arrangement that I prefer smile .

I would have waited to order them together if I had known they were coming out soon. Any estimated time of arrival for Rock Bassey and Rhythmo?

We are working hard.  Should be done this year!  The bass clef flashcards (color coded) will be done beforehand, though.

Regarding the "Rainbow Piano Technique," I know my son would take great issue with a rainbow that didn't include green, but had 3 different shades of brown. I notice that the notes somehow switch their color scheme--possibly at middle C, so that the child has to learn two sets of colors for the C scale. Possibly, the colors are different on the web in sRGB than they are in print, but the three shades of brown are hard to distinguish at a glance for me.

I'm waiting for my Trebellina DVD to see if A is indigo. If so, it's my ideal color arrangement, because it will fulfill my color sensitive child's sense of order. He hates seeing indigo discriminated against in a 6 color rainbow.

Hi,

I would appreciate it if anyone who tried this method was able to transit from color coded to reguar (black) easily or you had to restart to teach the musical notes again.

I learned how to read notes from age 6 and I got a lesson almost everyday for 9years after in Asia. I started from Hanon.

I think it's neat concept to color code piano keys and notes at the beginning to learn. But I wonder whether baby just sees colors on the musical notes on the book and hit the piano keys with color association automatically.

I guess the joy that they get when they hear beautiful melody that they are making could inspire them to explore further. But I don't know it's easy to transit from that point.

Yes, it's not necessary to find colored-key keyboards at all. Simply get some colored stickers and paste them on yourself, or improvise in a similar way.

What I'm wondering is whether there's any organization like Suzuki which uses a 'standard' color set.  In our current pre-beta Little Musician, we also do code the keys, in both shapes and colors, so it'd be useful to know if there were standards out there we could use.  As mentioned in the other thread, I have not come across any reliable source that says these are the colors used by Suzuki (if they even use colors in the first place!).

KL, did you decided which colors to use for which notes in LM? The reason I am asking, we just got a keyboard for our daughter, and I am planning to color the keys in order to use color method. Since I saw that you will be using the color coding in LM, I thought to use the same colors for the same notes, so in the future we cam use this in conjunction with Little Musician?

Also, I was just wondering if it will be possible to have some kind of a note-editing program in LM, which will enable us to put in the simple melody in, and will make it possible to afterward to print it out from the program in color, so we can use it for the "practice sheets", I think many people will really appreciate that, since it is not that difficult to copy a simple melody in notation from somewhere else, and if the LM authomaticaly will put these notes in different colors and will enable us to print it out in large format, it will make this a great success among the early music learning community. I will definetly be recommending it to many of my friends even just for that option!  yes

Do you have an idea when the Beta version will be coming out? Cant wait!

Right now the colors we use are still what we had in the beginning, which were quite arbitrarily chosen (can't remember which). Will be revisiting this issue over the course of time, including during beta - it's quite easy to change if we want to.

Come to think of it, we'll see if it's easy to allow you to customize the colors yourself.

Yes, you can create custom melodies, but currently there is no print function, like how there isn't one in LMt either.  Like for LMt, the print function is being backburned for future releases, unfortunately...

Still hoping to get LMs out before the end of the year. Just so bogged down by so many other things now (if only we could share with you what else we are working on!!! smile )
