Marina's keen to start writing and has the tripod grip mastered with both hands so I'd like to get her started. Any body know where I can download those printing sheets with the alphabet in dots or dashes that children can trace over?

My son really enjoys the kumon books, they aren't very expensive and build on skill very gradually.

how did she learn the tripod grip?  my dd loves to have me 'color' numbers (she mean write) and then she will scribble over them.  i think she very much wants to learn to copy them.

Hello,

Using those sheets is great, but you may want to put them in a binder the horizontal way so the child can write on an incline.  Also, using pencil, crayons, and chalk are better because the child "feels" the writing, rather than using markers and pens.  These ideas are from Handwriting without Tears.

Sorry for the delay in replying octaviaorca - I only just saw your post. I found these crayon rocks that force a tripod grip because of their shape - I think they helped, but Marina's been manipulating very small objects since she was six months old, so maybe she's just a natural tripod-grip-type kid...

awesome!  thanks for the suggestion!  she has started 'coloring' her own letters but although they don't look like anything she tells me what they are.  and her favorite have been letter tracing pages so i think i will order those crayons and see if she is ready.

check out the tripod writing tool video that I made using an old pantyhose container listed here.

We use a special clipboard that actually looks like a binder but has the clip at the top. I have taught many children how to write using this board however it can be awkward to use at first. Here is a link to a website that has them for sale.
