I was just wondering where you suggest I go next?  My son is almost done with YBCR and is OBSESSED with them.  When he got hurt a few weeks ago, all he wanted to do all night was watch YBCR again and again.  I definitely want something to fill the void when we are done.  Would Preschool Prep or YCCR be better?

You might want to PM Teaching My Toddlers.  I THINK she has both programs.  I only have YCCR.  We like it.  It seemed to be a big jump from YBCR, though, from YBCR having single words to YCCR having full on sentences and speed reading.

Your Child Can Read.  It is by the same makers as Your Baby Can Read.

Ahhh.  Thank you.  With a quick search, I found a description:

"Graduate Your Baby to the next level! Your Child Can Read is the next step in your child’s advanced language development. It combines the best of phonics and whole-word learning methods. Together teaches children to read with comprehension using word, image and phonetic sound association. Children learn to read in a naturally fast paced manner using interactive songs, poems and word games.

Apples & Oranges. YCCR reinforces reading, PP teaches teaches letters, shapes (basic only, probably about 8 I think), colors, numbers (with some quantity but I think the  Cool focus is heavier on identifying 0-10, and about 50 sight words (spread out over 3 DVDs). Cartoon format, no plot, the only words spoken in all of the DVD's are the names of the item being presented in that moment (letter name, word name, color, or shape).  So when letter A is shown, the letter A is repeated maybe 10 times, and it moves on to B after that. You can always just buy the sight words only, if so, I love their flashcards too and highly reccomend them. Another forum member here used it with their child and at 15 months her DD learned the 50

YCCR is a much better production & song quality than YBCR and but the presentation is similar. Lots more sentences and phonetic words are presented in a variety of ways (on bean bags, finger puppets, text flashed on screen, in alphabet soup, lots of creative ways) and there are many, many more words presented in YCCR than YBCR. With less/maybe NO repetition of words within the DVD.

The best way to compare them would be with video clips. Preschool Prep has a you tube channel but I will try to find some YCCR clips for you.

How old is your baby/toddler? Do they know most of the concepts being taught in PP, if so, that will make your decision easy. If you are looking to teach the alphabet, I like PP for younger babies and Leapfrog for toddlers and older. PP does not currently teach letter SOUNDS, just letters, but Meet the Phonics is supposed to come out very soon (this past February actually).

elorm-

Have you  tried the free two week trial yet to see how your baby likes it? The formats are different. If you had to choose b/w one and the other, I would pick LR because it is infinitely expandable and can grow with your child. But the DVD's are still nice for the times you need to "occupy" baby to get something done. It is ideal to always watch the learning DVD's WITH your child, but I am a modern mom and that is not always possible.

LR only takes 10 minutes a day of screen time versus the 30 minutes of YBCR, so I think the commitment aspect is easier with LR. I would try the trial and see how it goes.  But I would also look for a cheap used set of YBCR on craigslist or something like that, and use both depending on the need  (use LR daily and YBCR intermittently for when you need to take a shower or clean the kitchen, etc...when you need the distraction!)  Depending on where you live, you might be able to borrow YBCR from your library or through the worldcat interlibrary loan program too. For many parents, it's unrealistic not to have DVD/TV time, and it's always better to reach for an educational choice than it is to turn on broadcast TV.   My vote? Get the LR if it's b/w the two, but if you can swing it, get both. smile

PS Keep in mind you can always download the YBCR word files in LR, so the best of both worlds, but you're not going to get a 30 minute "electronic babysitter" out of it if that's what you need occasionally.

Thank you Teaching My Toddlers!  I think I will eventually do both YCCR and the Sight Words from PP, but was curious as to which to do first.  My son is only 6 months old, so I am trying to hold off on Leap Frog, and other plot based stories.  I am not that worried about doing the PP colors or shapes, as we have so many other things to teach him those that are much more interactive.  I don't want to do the PP numbers yet, either.  We are currently doing Doman style dot cards, and I would much prefer he focus on learning quantities now and the symbols for numbers later.  From what you were saying, I should do the PP Sight Words first, and then YCCR?

Elorm - They are two very different systems.  YBCR is a bit more hands off.  It also teaches using a more left brain format.  LR uses a combination of methods and teaches more words.  Since I have pretty limited funds, I chose to get LR Basic to use with the YBCR that we got as a gift.  My son likes YBCR better and I like LR better, so I am glad I use both.  I have made do with printing my own flash cards to show him rather than having the full deluxe kit.  In the long run, I have no idea which will work better, but as long as he can read, I don't care.

Keep in mind I am writing with a little terror throwing books and toys onto my lap,so I am going to try to write my opinions of the products quickly.
I used YBCR with my daughter and she loved it... we also have YCCR and Preschool Prep and Little Reader.

My daughter doesn't seem to really love PP, she will watch it sometimes and she def. likes the sight words better then colors and numbers. The video is all animation and very repetitive. YBCR was not as repetive and my daughter learned a lot these dvds are a little annoying after a while( like they keep saying of of of of of of of of of of of....OF). Its great but sometimes (i don't know if it is just me, but its like enough!) I like them but if I had the choice again I wouldn't get them. Since my daughter doesn't really show much attention to them, to me they ended up being a waste. I was really excited to get this product too but ultimately was disappointed. My daughter really likes the part at the end of the Sight Words DVDs where the children read short simple sentences and they show the words, but there isn't enough of that in the dvds.

YCCR is much better for my daughter. She is much more engaged in it. I was very nervous that this product wasn't going to be good but it is very good. We have only used the first 2 dvds so far but my daughter loves them they show lots of words and phonetic chunking. It also shows great ways to teach your child if you don't want to use the screen. Like you can use magnetic letters and rubber stamps, and paint, sand, soup, fabric letters ect.. to teach them during play time.

Little Reader is another my daughter loves, and you can customize it, it is a great buy because you can add your own things to it and you can dowload what other parents have made for their children along with introdcuing foreign language.
