Little Reader now Young Author

In mid-2008 I began nurturing my daughter’s love of reading with Little Reader.

I have wonderful memories of using Little Reader with her, and I would spend many happy hours preparing lesson files for her in the days before the fantastic Little Reader curriculums were available.

Fast forward 7 years and both of my children are addicted to reading, and I am very thankful to the inspirational people behind programs such as Little Reader, Your Baby Can Read and Doman for helping me teach my children to read in such a loving way.

I am proud to announce that my eldest child, Penny, has grown from my “little reader” to a published author.

When Penny was 9, her major class assignment involved selecting a topic to research and a method of presentation. Penny’s fascination with ancient history and love of reading came together in her novel about a girl in Ancient Greece. Now at 10 years of age Penny has decided to raise funds for her school library by selling her novel on Amazon.

I thought that I would share Penny’s achievement with you as I believe it helps to substantiate the efforts of loving families who choose to teach their young children to read.

Also, there just might be children out there who, like my children now aged 7 and 10, grew up with Little Reader and may enjoy reading a novel written by a fellow Little Reader “graduate”.

I will show Penny your kind words as soon as she wakes up in the morning, and I know exactly what she will do, give me a bright smile and a hug before dashing off to pull out her writing book and continue working on her next novel, the second book in the series.

We are tremendously proud of our delightful Penny, and it is wonderful for her to also regularly receive congratulations from so many members of our local community – including children, parents and teachers. Penny is particular glowing on the days when she arrives home from school and tells me that a fellow student was sitting in the library at lunch reading her novel and came to find her to say how awesome it is.

Hi, Mum,

Well, I enjoyed the story and am myself an early learning "graduate" via the "Doman" method.  But I'm 30 years old, so I don't know if I qualify as a child anymore!

The story flows really smoothly, I read it just now in one sitting, postponing the errands trip my wife and I had scheduled so I could finish! 

I feel myself really connecting with Drew the protagonist. I find the story switches smoothly between a clear descriptive style at times, and a warm narrative apologue feel in other parts.

Anyways, the one quibble I have about the story is... that it ended at 29 pages!  Where's book two?  With these book series, you have to keep the audience engaged by delivering the next book relatively quickly, right? Although maybe the cliffhanger ending is biasing my perspective on such matters...  

 

For others who might be interested in reading young Ms. Mercier's story, I was able to read it for free in my regular computer internet browser with a 30-day free trial of "Kindle Unlimited".
