This may be due to the internet browser that you are using. It has been discussed in some of the other little musician threads.
If you're using Internet Explorer, your browser may have saved the backup and content files as *.zip files instead of the correct file extensions.
I found that using google chrome to download Little Musician was quick and straightforward.
