I don't normally like to talk about politics, but when it involves my child, I feel compelled to speak up. There is something that our current administration may try to adopt. It is called the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Some countries have already adopted it. It basically gives the government, moreover, the U.N., the right to tell us (and to enforce) how to raise our children. They could tell us how what we are allowed (and not allowed to do), including education, discipline and religion. For example, if you chose to smack your child's hand, you could go to jail for child abuse. If you put your child on restriction for something, your child could make a big deal of it and get your parental rights taken away. If you make your teen to go to church with you, you could lose your parental rights.
I am not going to go into the logistics of it, but rather let you read up on it yourself. It infuriates me to think of the ramifications of adopting this in our country. http://www.parentalrights.org/index.asp?Type=NONE&SEC={520635A0-D52D-4DA9-8AE7-CA574A3228F0}

Ten things you need to know about the substance of the CRC. read this carefully

1. Parents would no longer be able to administer reasonable spankings to their children.
2. A murderer aged 17 years, 11 months and 29 days at the time of his crime could no longer be sentenced to life in prison.
3. Children would have the ability to choose their own religion while parents would only have the authority to give their children advice about religion.
4. The best interest of the child principle would give the government the ability to override every decision made by every parent if a government worker disagreed with the parent's decision.
5. A child's "right to be heard" would allow him (or her) to seek governmental review of every parental decision with which the child disagreed.
6. According to existing interpretation, it would be illegal for a nation to spend more on national defense than it does on children's welfare.
7. Children would acquire a legally enforceable right to leisure.
8. Christian schools that refuse to teach "alternative worldviews" and teach that Christianity is the only true religion "fly in the face of article 29" of the treaty.
9. Allowing parents to opt their children out of sex education has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.
10. Children would have the right to reproductive health information and services, including abortions, without parental knowledge or consent.

Ten things you need to know about the structure of the CRC.

1. It is a treaty which creates binding rules of law. It is no mere statement of altruism.
2. Its effect would be binding on American families, courts, and policy-makers.
3. Children of other nations would not be impacted in any direct way by our ratification.
4. The CRC would automatically override almost all American laws on children and families because of our Supremacy Clause.
5. The CRC has some elements that are self-executing, while others would require implementing legislation. Federal courts would have the power to determine which provisions were self-executing.
6. The Courts would have the power to directly enforce the provisions that are self-executing.
7. Congress would have the power to directly legislate on all subjects necessary to comply with the treaty. This would constitute the most massive shift of power from the states to the federal government in American history.
8. A committee of 18 experts from other nations, sitting in Geneva, has the authority to issue official interpretations of the treaty which are entitled to binding weight in American courts and legislatures. This effectively transfers ultimate authority for all policies in this area to this foreign committee.
9. Under international law, the treaty overrides even our Constitution.
10. Reservations, declarations, or understandings intended to modify our duty to comply with this treaty will be void if they are determined to be inconsistent with the object and purpose of the treaty.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  If all that were true, it would be politically disastrous for Congress to adopt it and for the President to sign it.  Besides, the Supreme Court recognizes the Constitution above all treaties, and several points you raise are contrary to standard interpretations of the Constitution.  In short, our country possesses neither the political will nor the legal structure to adopt everything parentalrights.org finds in the CRC.

Right, but our president may have different ideas. From Wikipedia United States
Main article: US ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child

The United States government played an active role in the drafting of the Convention and signed it on 16 February 1995, but has not ratified it.[1] Opposition to the Convention is in part due to what are seen as potential conflicts with the Constitution and because of opposition by some political and religious conservatives.[23] The Heritage Foundation sees the conflict as an issue of national control over domestic policy.[24] President Barack Obama has described the failure to ratify the Convention as 'embarrassing' and has promised to review this.[25]

The US has signed and ratified both of the optional protocols to the Convention.[7][8]

Some of the terms are quite scary (not to mention ridiculous, IMO)!

That's pretty scary. I think that most parents do a good job at acting within reason with their parental duties.

I've seen this in action in Europe.  Thankfully, not in my house.  However, a friend had some issues.  Her children came home from school and said, "Today in school, they told us that we can call the police if you tell us to do our chores." And they weren't kidding.  They left Europe and decided to live in the States.

Later that year France was having youth riots, and they wondered why.

Yeah, I have heard similar stories, and that's what worries me.

I remember reading some crazy SciFi book along these lines...and I knew it would happen eventually.

You're not the only person I've heard this from. Our pastor was encouraging us to take political action against this...apparently, people really are worried about this. I need to look into it more, but if this is seiously being considered we've got major problems, ladies and gentlemen.
