Hi!

Can you try reinstalling LR and see.  While you're at it, download the latest build from your Account management (1.6.324).

If that doesn't help, please create a Diagnostic Report:
- from Windows START menu
-> All Programs
-> BrillKids (folder)
-> Little Reader (folder)
-> find "Diagnostic" item. 

It will generate a file called "Little_Reader_2010_...zip" in your C:\...\My Documents\BrillKids\Tools folder.  Please attach that here.

Hi Nadia,

Thanks for your patience in the matter.  Please find attached a patched LittleReader.mdb file which has been zipped up.  Follow the instructions below to replace your current faulty MDB with the patched file:

1. Download the attachment
2. Unzip the attachment's contents somewhere that you will remember.
3. Navigate to My Documents\BrillKids\Little Reader\Data
4. In this folder, locate the file "LittleReader.mdb" and delete it.
5. Go back to where you unzipped the contents of the attachment and copy the new file into My Documents\BrillKids\Little Reader\Data

Hi Nadia,

Yes, you cannot change Category names for Categories that are used in the Courses, or Little Reader will not function properly.  The things you CAN do are:

1)edit words (rename, add other content).

Note: if you delete default words from default categories, then this word will be deleted from courses, remember that!

2)edit Categories (remove default words and add own words), but if you rename Categories which are used by Courses, LR will stop working (such actions will crash the database, as you have been experiencing.)

Alternatively, you can create your own Categories and use them in your own Playlists.

With regard to the curriculum, it's my understanding that yours is now highly modified, so unfortunately I think it would be risky to try and correct the mistakes without losing the work you've done.

However, if you would like to try downloading just the curriculum file (go to your Account Management > Download in Parts > Semester 1/2 Curriculum, not Content) and importing it, it should overwrite the existing Course lesson settings, adding back in the Phonics lessons you are missing, as well as correcting the Split mode errors, etc.

Hi Nadia,

Unfortunately that isn't a solution we'd recommend, as Semester 2 requires features that are only available in the latest version, and in theory changing the Category names, even in the older versions, shouldn't have worked  . 

We're sorry for the inconvenience, we are currently and will continue to be working towards enabling parents as much flexibility and freedom as possible in their library structure in future versions of LR.

Sorry for not having gotten back to you sooner.

A few things:

1. Renaming Categories

This will sometimes be OK, but other times it will not work.  Why?

The curriculum lessons will sometimes specify word files. For example, Day 1 Lesson B (multisensory) specifies that it should first play the Action Words title slide, then 'clap', then 'wave', etc.  In such a case, then changing the Subject Category name of "BK - Action Words 1" will be fine for this lesson, because this lesson does not refer to "BK - Action words 1" as a Category. 

Other times, however, LR simply specifies the entire Category.  For example, in Semester 2, all the Story lessons (part E) simply refer to the Category name, like "BK - Friendly Crocodile".  If you change the Category name, LR won't know where to find it anymore.

(Note: In the previous example, if you change the word file name, like "bk-act-words-clap" to something else, then LR will have problems cos it won't be able to find that word file. This is the same principle.  It all depends on what LR is trying to look for.)

2. Translation

If you want to translate BrillKids Categories, the best thing to do right now is to make a copy of the Category and then translating that, instead of editing the original Category.  Later versions of LR will give you a "Save as" feature, but right now, you can achieve it by exporting the Category and re-importing it back in, but choosing "rename" in the name conflict options for Category and Word File items.

You will now have 2 copies of the Category and Word Files, and you can do with them whatever you like.  However, do note that the curriculum will not be able to play back these translated items cos you cannot edit the curriculum right now.

3. Word Flash Lessons - 9 or 18 words?

When we first created Semester 1, we had 18 words (6 from each Category), and this was the same for Word Flash, Multisensory, and Picture Flash.  After getting feedback from users (we even asked about this in the Forum), we concluded that 18 words flashed in sequence was too long for most babies, so we reduced it to 9.  For each Category, instead of showing 6 words, we would show 3 words in Session 1, and the other 3 words in Session 2 to make up for it.

We used this standard in Semester 2, and also in the Semester 1 content upgrade pack (where we mentioned that this was one of the changes).

If you prefer all 18 words to be shown in a session, just play back the Word Flash lessons from both Session 1 and Session 2.

4. Split Mode

Split mode is only ON by default in the following types of lessons:

- Pattern Phonics
- Special lessons where we are trying to demonstrate something specific, like singular/plural, couplets, etc.

The standard 'vocab' lessons have split mode OFF by default.


Regarding your problems, it's hard for me to analyse now because it seems that your translation efforts have somehow ended up corrupting the database.

Can you tell me what the problems are again now, and attach your database (.mdb) file (zipped up).

Hello Nadia,

In order to have your Russian translations play instead of the original English words, I suggest that you edit the words from the English Categories (just change the "Word(s)" in the Edit Word window). Please DO NOT change the "word file name" especially if you're editing the original English Categories - if you do this, then LR will not work!

If you translate all your Categories this way (by changing only the "Word(s)"), you will be able to show Russian words (instead of the English words) when you play your Semester 1 and 2 courses. Kindly note, however, that by changing the words in your original English Categories you will lose the original set of English words that come with your Little Reader content. This is why KL strongly recommends that you create a copy of your English Categories first and work on the copy for your translation (please refer to KL's May 13 post above).
