I'm interested in the Wink to learn Chinese set consisting of 6 DVDs (set price 89 US$). Can I use the  10% coupon for this set? I'm not sure if this set will be counted as 1 item or 6 items?

With so many impressive reviews by various forums and educators on this Wink to Learn Chinese DVD set by my local publisher, I were about to redeem my discount coupon.

However, after watching the sample clips, I change my mind and really hope that the pronounciation of the children in the DVDs and some of the content were as good as the reviews.


** Animal DVD 
    features a camel with no hump (without the Chinese text, u can hardly tell it's a camel. If my child questions, i probably
    tell her this camel is not living in the desert so it doesnt need so much storage =P )
    and the uncommon white tiger, seem familiar from the Singapore Zoological Garden?
    I can see it in almost all of my friends' family photo allbum who had been to the zoo. Or should it be under the category
    of endangered animals?
    If the publisher mentioned in the FAQ that they had travelled the world to capture realistic images, shouldn't they select
    the best picture to represent the subject?

**  请... DVD
    Not the kind of values that i like my child to pick up, like asked to help to carry her bag/ water bottle/ comb her hair for
    her or carry her when she is like 5 or older. Would have trained her to do things independently by then, better scenerio
    could have been quoted. The child mispronouced 手shou3 as sou3. The pace of the show is not any faster than
    Tweedlewink & lacks interactivity.

    Are the little narrators meant to add cuteness/ interest to the show, would appreciate that they are given some prior
    speech & drama training since this is an educational program and children tend to learn more from other children. 

**  Right Brain Training
     I believe there is better video-editing technique than merely a fast-forward alike mode to create robotic and distorted   
     narration. The colour-coded chinese characters seem promising but without an order or system , it can be quite
    challenging in cognitive learning. 


** Sing to Learn
     The vocal of the high-pitched child is just not the most comforting thing to hear for a start.   
    我的朋友在哪里
    的 is pronounced as Di4 as well as De4, i thought it would be confusing for the children even though both can be used. )
    四 is pronounced as Shi1 instead of Si1.
    Many scenes are filmed locally at the Public Housing void decks/ common corridors which add some 'heartland'
    flavours. There are also many beautiful landscaped neighbourhood gardens and National parks to consider as backdrops.

    How do these singing dvds stand out from most other chinese karaoke dvd/ vcd?
    No cheesy/ over-dressed children in choreograhped dance steps.

** What is the purpose of Musical Rewards showing random pictures?
 
    Kids would likely walk away from the TV if birds etc. dont interest them. How rewarding/ exciting would u think they
    will feel? How about a star/ badge awarding system where the child could had accumulated when he/she had covered     
    more chapters?


1200 high resolution pics, i am just not convinced as a concerning parent. For now, will stick to watching National Geographic with my child and carry on with our conventional flash cards/ power point slides.

In a nutshell, not overpriced but over-rated product.

I thought much the same upon viewing the sample videos. I don't see how the Sing to Learn are any different from Karaoke videos: We got 5 for $20 Canadian in chinatown. There doesn't seem to be any teaching as in, the children aren't doing what the words say, or having flashcards of the objects or actoins named in the words.

I too don't see much point in the "musical rewards" and I didn't really find the flashcards to be engaging at all. The voices often seem to be prerecorded words put together to form sentences, rather than a natural speaking voice saying a whole phrase.

Are there some users of thee dvds out there who really like them, or don't, who could tell us more? What re their strengths and weaknesses?
