As far as I understand, linking memory is supposed to be the left brain's way of memorising a lot of data.

Hi ShenLi,
I'm getting confused.
I thought linking memory is part of right brain training from some place I read.
I'm worried about accidentally over exposing my girl to too much left brain training...
all these are getting too difficult for me.

I thought so as well, until I spoke to Wennie.  She said Linking Memory is a right brain activity for left brain people.  But it is not a recommended activity for young children who are still heavily right brain.

It is a bit confusing for me, too, but since my older boy loves linking memory, we do it anyway.  I don't do it with my baby, though.  Wennie said that if you do linking memory with your child, make sure you start from the start every time - don't be tempted to skip the parts your child has already memorised.

I also just remembered something else Wennie said - if your child can read the time, he is more left brain.  That's one way of telling if your child has transitioned to the left brain.

I hope that helps.  I'm learning a lot these past couple of weeks, too.  Just been blundering along not knowing what I was doing.  Didn't realise that more could actually be less in terms of frequency of exposure, so now I'm really careful not to repeat too much.

Hi ShenLi,
thanks! smile My girl does the linking memory also.
When you say read the time, do you mean tell the time?

Shen Li
Can you give me a bit of an idea what Linking memory is all about. I think I know what you are talking about though I am writing to be absolutely sure.

Thanks

Caryn - yes, reading the time as in telling the time.  My son still can't do it although I have taught him the concept of reading the time quite early on.

Indidee - Linking memory is about remembering a sequence of unrelated pictures by creating a funny story to link them.

For instance, imagine these ten pictures: camelia, tattoo, mountain, trishaw, starfish, t-shirt, tadpoles, lamp, roach, and fountain.  You might create the following story to help you remember all the pictures you saw:

I had some camelias which I tattooed on my arm while climbing up a mountain.  The mountain was so steep, I hired a trishaw that was being pulled by a starfish wearing a green t-shirt.  The t-shirt had tadpoles on its sleeve which you could only see under a lamp lit with a roach beside a magical fountain.

That's basically what linking memory is all about.  Some call it silly stories or memory train.  It's just a method of memorising unrelated information.

Hi Shenli
How do you 'play' linking memory with a 20mo? Do you just tell the story, do you need to show images, what happens after, do you ask the child to remember the story, how do you ask them to do so?

Thx :-)

Hypatia - the first time I did linking memory was with my older son.  He was three years old.  I was later told that linking memory should not be done too early because it is a right brain tool for left brain people.  Young children are already right brain active and don't need linking memory to memorise things.  Based on that advice, I would avoid doing linking memory with any child younger than 4.  If your 4 year old is still right brain dominant, I would avoid doing linking memory until later.

I was also told not to question a child to see if he knows the answers because it does two things we don't want:

1. It tests the child which all children hate.  If you test a child, he will be put off and eventually dislike the activity.

2. To offer an answer, the child needs to process the question in his left brain, therefore you would be encouraging the left brain to kick in early - also something we don't want because we want the right brain to remain dominant for longer so we can maximise its potential.

When your child is ready for linking memory, what you do is show the pictures and tell the story as you open each picture.  Linking memory is typically done with 100 cards, maybe more.  Each time you start the game, you begin with the first picture and tell the story all over again.  Keep repeating it (over several sessions) and the same story. Eventually your child will remember all the pictures in their correct order from 1 to 100.

You can ask your child to tell you what are the cards, or to tell you the story before turning over each card until he can't remember.  If he changes the story, let him.  What is important is that he remembers the picture of the card and in the correct order starting with no. 1.  I've seen different methods of linking memory being done but this is how I've been told that it should be done for it to work properly.

Hope that helps.   smile

Hi Wennie,
I just got my Tweedle Wink package today! *Happy*

HOWEVER, the language DVD has a lot of fine scratches and the volume 4 DVD looks weird.
The printing on the CD is not like the rest. Feels rough and the printing is not sharp plus the CD feels heavier.
Is this normal? Also the DVD all came in shrink wrap except for the 2 with problem.

Is it possible to get an exchange for these 2? Sad
How is exchange done?

Hi Caryn

Maybe you should email Wennie directly about your DVD's - I am not sure if she reads this forum regularly enough, and I am sure that she would really want to ensure that you're happy with your DVD's!

Her email address is [email protected]

Shenli,

Thank you so much for the information. Wow! I didn't know any of this. Memory Magic includes "SillyStories". I tried like two times to do it with my daughter but she was not interested. Now, I'm glad she wasn't since based on your explanation she is way to young for these. K2U
