BrillKids Software / Tech Support / Script error report
|
on: June 14, 2011, 11:50:03 AM
|
|
When I open up the LR program, I receive a script error message. The box asks if I would like to continue running scripts and I usually click on yes. How can this be fixed?
Also, when I finish playing a LR file, around 50% of the time a blank white screen comes up and I cannot exit out of the screen. I usually have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del to go to task manager and close LR and start the program again.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: how to train baby to fall asleep on his/her own?

The only method that worked for my daughter was the CIO method. We tried other methods but nothing else was as effective and the whole family desperately needed to sleep. Need to make sure she is well fed before she goes to sleep, the room is completely darkened and you know her different cries (eg. if she is in pain). There is a specific cry that babies make when they are crying down.
We also followed the The New Contented Little Baby Book which lays out a daily sleep/eating routine. Took about a month to get my daughter to fall asleep on her own. At first listening to the crying was painful; the crying goes through series of increasing peaks - when you reach the point you cannot handle the crying any more, this is usually the peak (about 10 mins) - do not go into the child's room, the crying will decrease from this point on.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Teaching EK- There has to be an easier way?

I had also been thinking about doing EK in Little Reader and have been racking my brains trying to work out the most efficient and economical way to do so. The thought of researching all these topics seems like too much work!!!
What I've tried with my daughter, was download different topics from the Little Reader Library that my daughter was interested in; then created a playlist with 3-4 words from about 5 topics. This would be played to my daughter for a week. In terms of the points of interest, I thought I'd create a powerpoint style presentation (I used open org's program - very similar to MS Office but free download) to see if she was interested in learning any additional facts. I'll have to admit, I only did it for gorillas, but she did not seem as thrilled about watching it as she did with the LR playlists. I've attached the presentation that I created.
Now what I do is, with whatever topics I am showing for the week, whenever we talk about it or see a picture/object in real life, I give her facts then and there and she seems more interested in learning then eg. I had flashed some pictures of Musical Composers - Haydn and Debussy. During the week I'd play CDs of the composers and also play some pieces on the piano for her, whilst explaining who the composer was and what the music was written for etc, etc.
Hope this helps.

Here's the response:
Right now you cannot create new course items under the Courses and cannot edit the course lessons.
However, you can duplicate and edit the Categories that are used in the course lessons.
WARNING: Do not edit the original Categories and especially the words, otherwise the course lessons may not work!
To duplicate, first export all the Categories. You can select multiple items using the shift and ctrl keys and export all of it as 1 .cat file.
Then import it again, and when importing, access the advanced options to change Category and Word name conflicts resolution option to RENAME.
After that, all CAtegories and Word files will have a duplicate with a -1 added to the end of the name. You can now edit these however you want.
If you want to set up something similar to a course, you use use the Playlists feature.
Another thing I did accidentally but don't know how I did it - I now have a library of over 3,000 images from Little Reader. I think I opened up my media library on the computer and it automatically loaded it up on my computer!!!!!

Yes you can use the existing categories from the Little Reader curriculum. You export the category that you wish to change then import it back into Little Reader. When you go to import it, you need to rename the category. I asked this question only a couple of weeks ago. Click on my user name and it will take you to the full instructions KL gave me when I asked about it,

Could it be something simple, like he's waking up cold??
My daughter for the last few weeks had been waking up at around 3am screaming, would doze off and then wake up again every 45 mins. Ever since I rugged her right up (with what I thought was an excessive number of layers of clothing), she's been sleeping soundly. I do make sure she's not too hot or cold; just nice and cozy. It's not even winter yet but we've had 0 degree nights already (which is cold for autumn in down under!).

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Remembered after 6 months break and Right Brain questions
|

I have been wondering the same thing too. My daughter seems to remember things more when I used the multisensory approach. For example with dog breeds eg. I'll show her the words on flashcards/Little Reader, then every time we see the dogs on tv or when we go on trips, I reinforce them by pointing out the dogs to her and naming them at the same time. However, when I purely flash something to her, she doesn't recognise them when we see them in real life situations and we have been doing flashcards since she was 6 months old.
I choose to not rely on one method as I believe using multiple learning methods will stimulate numerous neurological connections to the brain; however, I am hoping the 'flashing' of cards will be one of the pathways to gaining a photographic memory. When playing/teaching my child, I do place a lot of emphasis on gaining comprehension of the information I am presenting to her as I think it is extremely important for her to not only recognise what something is and how it is spelt, but the whys, hows, whens, whos. I think the more information you present that is linked to a chosen subject, the more chance of recalling the information. This is similar to the memory mapping approach used in accelerated learning.
On a different tangent, my husband as a child didn't do flash cards but watched hours and hours of TV (even as a baby!!), and has excellent recall, word for word, of anything that he hears, even when he is not concentrating on the topic being presented. It is like he is constantly taking an auditory imprint of the information. I am guessing that the right brain flash card approach, does the same sort of 'training' for photographic memory.

Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Any good tagalog websites for toddlers?
|
on: May 11, 2010, 09:10:09 PM

I am an Filipino who was born and raised in Australia. Tagalog and Visaya were my first languages but when I started primary school I stopped speaking them altogether. I'd like to make sure my daughter can speak Tagalog fluently throughout her life.
Does anyone know of any Tagalog resources online that they have found useful? I am using Little Reader and powerpoint at the moment to create powerpoint presentations, but am looking for other resources to use? Any suggestions would be great!
