Hi Kimba I feel you should just relax, My daughter did the same, each time she would have a book in a her hand. They normally like to do it probally i guess because they feel in control.
Normaly what i do is, First, i just try to see, if she can give me control in turning the pages, if not then I let her turn the pages and as she turn the pages, i just tell her what's on the page quickly. I'll never sit to read, just point at pictures on the pages, sometimes i'll just put a little pressure on the page till i am done, before she quickly moves to the next page.
But if she just wants to turn page as a fun game, then i will just sit next her and let her take the lead to turn the page, as she quickly turns the page, I'll talk to her about how many pages she turned, hence this way we are having some fun with counting pages. When i start counting pages she turned, she would just repeat numbers after me and hence making this session joyful and enjoyable.
I guess, whatever you do with your child even if its for short intervals or just few mintues a day, just make that time fun and relaxing, let them always take the lead, as children they would love to play or listen to you when you are relaxed and enjoying with them.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Problem Solving Glenn Domain

Hi Mandi
I love doing problem solving sessions with my daughter. This is how i do with her as suggested by Glen Doman
A simple Problem Solving (PS inshort) session would be as below
Eg, if you want to do PS sessions on DOT Cards, this is what i do. 1. Hold up two dot cards. Lets say you choose Dot cards 30 and 12 2. When you hold them up to them or you put them on the table/floor which ever you feel comfortable showing them 3. You just ask them "Which is thirty?" This is a good opportunity for your baby to look or touch the card, if he wishes to do so. If your baby looks at the card or touches the card which has "thirty" dots on it, then you know that your child knows "thirty" But incase if he looks or touches another dot card say "tweleve" Then you just say "This is Thirty" by showing your child the card and then say this is "tweleve" by then showing the "tweleve" dot card In this way, you are happy and relaxed, knowing that you showed him what is thirty and twelve giving him another opportunity to learn.
However, if your child does not respond to what you asked, then hold the card with "thirity" dots closer to him and say "this is thirty, isnt it?" again in a happy and relaxed way
According to Glen, no matter how your child repsonds, he wins and so do you because the chances are good that if you are happy and relaxed he will enjoy doing this PS with again. He suggest that PS opportunities should be put at the end of the equation sessions which creates a nice balance of give and take to session since each session begins with you giving 3 opportunity for your child to solve one equation if he wishes to do so.
What he also says, that giving your child an opportunity to choose one number from another is all right to begin with but you should very shortly move on to opportunities to choose answers to do equations
He quotes that "Dont ask your child to say answers always give him a choice of two possible answers" He also says that "Remember that you are not trying to teach your child to talk, you are teaching him mathematics and that your child will find choosing to be alot more fun and that he will get irritated quickly if you demand speech as they dont like to be tested".
Hence in short PS sessions should be fun and relaxing irrespective your child gives a right answer or not. I follow this ground rule whenever i teach my child.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: Pause slideshow on little math

That's great, i would love to see how the feature works
To answer your question Sune, I always do problem solving sessons manually not thru Little Math (I dont think we can do it with PS in this beta release). I only use Little Math to teach her, but all problem solving sessions in maths are done manually.
About child not liking Math cards, I face the same issue with my daughter when she was under 1 year, but now she seems to like it. Infact the way i do with her manually is that, i give her the card to hold and then say the number, in this way she feels she's a part of the teaching game. Initially i would just flip the DOT Cards to quickly, and she would always take her eyes of the DOT Card or try to grab it from me each time i flipped it. Hence i decided to give the cards in her hands and then read it, and she now enjoys doing these sessions with me.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Reading success?

Hi tanikit My daughter still doesnt show me the right words, and I am not worried about it. I put my daughter on glen's program since birth infact immediately after delivery. I used the book"How smart is your baby" and then all the other books after that
My daughter talks alot but she doesnt show any sign to me of what she can read, and the reason i am not worried because each child is unique and as long she talks, it doesnt matter to me, i know for myself she definetly knows how to read but some children are just moody and they dont want to show it. But i keep doing the problem solving technique suggested by Glen Doman, i keep doing irresepective if she is right or wrong. I know one day she will surprise me that she can read. I trust this program by Glen and i know for sure, as long as i do this program on her religiously, she will surprise me someday.
So i feel dont worry, as i too sail in the same boat as you.

Hi Ayesha First of all i am honoured that I am your heroine. And quite glad that so many mothers did like my simple excel sheet that i used on my child.
About your question on flash cards, I actually started to get them printed on poster Letter head papers. Incase of maths i bought huge poster boards and stuck those red dots them for all 100 Dot cards, inase of encylopedia and words cards i printed them. I guess i might have printed atleast 10-15 categories, and incase of words nearly 100 of them. But it started to get expensive as every second day i would run of catridge ink, so much so i even went to the extent of buying high graphic printer, but it was too expensive for me to get them printed, and also very hectic as i have to pre-cut the word sheets, hence thats when i decided to get my encylopedia and words on ppt. But i was not sure if my daughter would like to see it on the TV/Computer, but when i first showed her the first ppt on my 32"HDTV she just loved it. And there was no stopping after that. Soon i started to make my own DVDs of encyclopedia so that i could send it to her daycare so that she could atleast one session of each Ency/Math/Read.
Now with the LR, i just use the encylopedia/maths/words extensively. But i also do juggle doing this program off computer that is i still show her dot cards manually and words cards too. I do this for only one reason, and that is, I want her to get use to reading materials from books or from flash cards shown manually. I dont want her to get too use to only one style of teaching.
Infact I find both method interesting, because that gets my daughter interested as its different each time.

Hi Texaslady22 I really salute you. It's a great accomplishment. Knowing how your child went from no talking to talking is remarkable, especially knowing that your child had speech problems.
I can totaly realate to you about when you talk about doing the Doman's method. Yes it is very exhausitive and would wear you out. I went thru the same phase for the 1st year of my daugter's life. I followed everything to the core. But i did it independently, my husband and family, was not so much into it, infact they were scared that I would make my child crazy and damage her brain. And yes I dont blame them, as none of my family memeber or his every thaught their children so vigourously. Infact my friends at times would laugh at me, and they still do, but when my daughter speaks to my friends in sentences at such young age, their jaws drop (believe me it's so true).
But I am very proud of you and I am sure your family too would be. Would you mind sharing your daily schedule in details, I would love to hear more on it.

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Teaching your child to read sentences by highlighting the word in the sentence
|
on: February 28, 2009, 02:57:51 AM

Hi I would like to know if Little Reader Lite has this feature on highlighting a word in a sentence as you speak.
Eg. If I have a sentence "Mommy is eating a yellow banana", I would like to know if the software can highlight Mommy when i speak Mommy , then focus the word on "is" as i speak "is" then focus on the next word "eating" as i speak "eating"
This would empahsize on the word as you speak in sentences to a child. Currently the way i do it is point to the screen and teach.
Any suggesstions or does little reader has this feature.
