BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Changing LR to include more Encyclopedic Knowledge? Can you cycle through facts?

Hi Charlottelk,
Yes, it is very easy to do with PRO version of Little Reader.
The way I would do it
1) Go to Play and Edit tab in LR 2) Search for English Curriculum folder, open it 3) In General Categories find the category you would like to edit 4) Once you selected the category, you will see the lost of words covered in category show up as a list on the right 5) Select the word you would like to edit, click "edit" on the bottom of the list, new box will open 6) Choose picture slide ( second option on the top), you will see the setting there for picture audio files. if you have your Encyclopedic Knowledge fact already recorded earlier, just choose add and load it from your computer 7) You can also choose the record option right there and record your EK fact, using LR built in audio recorder.
Once you added your additional EK fact recordings, they will rotate, and with each new showing you will hear a new set of facts. Even if you would play the same lesson again, you will hear a different fact every time.
It is actually very simple once you try, but if I was not clear in explaining it, let me know and I will try to make screen shots to lead you through the process. Also having built in Recorder in PRO version is a huge time saver, you do not need to toggle between different programs and it really streamlines the process.
Hope this helps.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: My daughters terrible twos are really terrible😞

I am sorry you've been experiencing terrible twos. I dont have much advice, because we have not experienced it much, if at all. I have 5.5 yo, 4 yo and 2 yo, and we've only had some behavior problems with my 5.5 yo, when she would miss her meal or have it later ( so her sugar levels would drop).
I think you are right about providing good exercise to them. Another important thing is good nutrition. For instance we do not have any commercially cooked meals at home, no additives, sugar or GMO products, and I think it really helps.
Also our kids get a lot of physical activities, they exercise outside on their playground in the yard and also have an indoor playground. They get about 3 good solid hours of active play.
Another thing that helps is no TV. On a few occasions we ve visited a relative with TV playing on the background or when TV viewing was unlimited, we were able to see how the behavior changed. In our home, we do not have TV at all, and we only view a very limited number of educational programs every day. It helps their level of concentration and interest and definitely helps with overall attitude.
They are not angels, and they do fight from time to time, but on overall we really enjoy our time together :-)

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Little Reader Lite - purchased curriculum

Hi EL education,
Without the PRO key you would not be able to use the library resources for Little Reader, you would not be able to make any adjustments or exchange any leaning lessons with other parents. You would only be able to play curriculum as is. Think of it as a DVD with pre-recorded lessons - that is your Little Reader Lite with Language course. With PRO key you get pretty much unlimited editing powers, you can change adjust and re-arrange, use thousands of lessons from the BrillKids Library, create your own lessons, share them with others and much more.

I tried it and did not like the selection that much. An application that is way better in my opinion ( and my kids loved it) is MeeGenius, they offer 800+ books library, with some really great titles for 4.99 a month. We did one month free ( they offer 30 day trial, which is a great way to try it out with your little one), and after a month ( andmy 4 yo reading about 130 books), we decided to subscribe for another coupe of months...

Hi Katie,
We have received your application! First off, so sorry you had a hard time contacting us. It most likely happened due to the time difference, our office that takes care of all the individual applications is located in HK, which is 11-15 hour difference from USA. It usually takes us 5-8 business days to evaluate an application and reply, I can see that your application was filed on the 23rd of September, so I am sure your reply will come shortly!
Also, from the first look, I do not think you need to file any additional documents, as what we have on file is sufficient!
I hope your little ones would enjoy the programs and we are wishing you everything the best!

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How do I approach excessive TV watching with family day care provider
|

We do not take our children to daycare. But on a few rare occasions some family member stayed with them or spent time with them, we had a clear cut rule of "No TV at all". It was easier that way, as there is not much to discuss and too much or too little is so subjective and different from person to person. But if the rule is that "NO TV allowed at all", then they are forced to come up with other activities ( which we usually provide in our case), which are much better and healthier for the kids. We never regretted this, as it only brought a good fruit, and took any unpleasant discussion on what and how much viewing is OK away.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Ideas to reinforce what we learn with Little Reader?
|
on: September 23, 2014, 09:44:47 AM

Little Reader was the key for us, for sure! The reason we liked it is because we can keep track of the lessons and steadily progress, and because of shortness and well-roundeness of the lessons. I would say it is more imporant to have a regular short well-rounded input every day, then long elaborate learning activity once in a while. The secret, that I discovered with my children is to keep on going and have fun, and NOT THINKING ABOUT results. As long as you have input and make it fun, it should not matter for you that you do not see obvious results. Just keep on going.... and results will come in the most amazing way and probably when you expect them the least. With my first child, she showed her ability to read at about 12 months, reading random complicated flashcards. Then she decided that she did not want to show what she knew, but we continued with Little Reader, because it gave her great phonics foundation and vocabulary. Then around 3 yo, she started to read on the 1st grade level overnight. One day she would not read to us and would show the wrong answers, the next day she took a simple chapter book and red it smothly and perfectly. She progressed rapidly after that and never went back. The VERY SAME thing happened with my second child! We faithfully did LR, short and sweet every day, and showed lots of enthusiasm in dong it ourselves. He did not show his ability to read, excerpt for a separate words when he wanted Then one day when he as 3 yo, he woke up in the morning and said Mommy I can read anything! And... he did!! He took his children's Bible and red chapter after chapter outloud. Ever since we can not stop them Our youngest at 1.5 yo loves reading as well. Differently from two older ones he does not speak fluently ( both older ones spoke fluently in full sentences since 12 month), so I can not gauge accurately how much he is reading. One other thing that we did a lot in addition to Little Reader was Native Reading -- reading books together, while following with finger every word we are sounding out. We read a lot every single day more then 20 books per child. So that was a lot of native reading there. We have not done anything else for reading, but all 3 of our LOs love reading and are good at it. And I am thankful for LR, that helped me to be consistent and for simple reading/bonding time together every day you are doing great, so just continue and have fun!

Well, most resources that I take note of are actual websites, it would not be possible to save the whole site somewhere... As far as other materials, do you mean youtube videos and such? Then in most cases, if they are taken down it is because of copy write infringement...

Hi Cheerymom,
So sorry you feel disappointed with the picture quality. I faced the same dilemma. I got our set about 4 years ago and used it loosely ( not consistently) with 3 of my kids. I like the content a lot and the DVDs structure, but like you I was clearly disappointing with the picture quality, especially since my husband is professional photographer, and we had many pictures of the same places and subjects in amazing quality.
But all things considered, they did an amazing job pulling all the materials together, honestly it IS a HUGE job, and probably had hard time sourcing high quality photographs. At the end, I decided to go ahead with showing the programs to my kids. Of course I would prefer their graphics and photographs would be high quality, like for instance BrillKids products. But the benefits outweigh for us in this case.
