1  The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Re: What Have We Been Up To At BrillKids? on: November 23, 2011, 02:00:16 AM
HI KL,

I'm excited about the LR for iPad.  I have been considering getting an iPad for myself as it's so quick to fire up and my daughter loves using her grandfather's iPad and playing with the children's applications.  She doesn't like sitting in front of my computer watching LR (only got up to day 30something this time last year before giving up showing it to her).  I also have DS who is 6 months and want to try showing him LR too.

What I was wanting to know is - when will the sem 1 and 2 English (and Chinese) curriculum become available on iTunes?  And if I already have English will I need to pay any more for the iPad lessons?

Thanks so much for your help!
Christine

Hi Everyone,
I thought I'd post a code so that whoever is interested in trialing the ABC Reading Eggs programme can do so for free for 5 weeks.  I know that other people have posted about it and given it good reviews.
The promotion code is ESN72GLC - you must register before August 22
Kind regards
3  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Chinese Curriculum is only download or physical product comes with it on: May 15, 2011, 07:13:06 AM
The government in China introduced Simplified Chinese to make it easier for the citizens to become literate in the mid 1900s.  However, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the major 2 countries which have not switched to Simplified Chinese characters.  I am learning university Chinese at the moment - and also having spoken to a few people from Hong Kong - have heard that the argument for learning Traditional Characters is that they have a meaning behind them (according to the 'radicals' within the character) and if you understand the smaller components (radicals) then you will find it easier to memorise.  The critisism that I have heard level against Simplified Characters is sometimes they bear no resemblance to the traditional Character.

Having started learning in Traditional - it's certainly more difficult to write the script ... and a lot easier to learn Simplified.  And I don't recall too many problems switching from Traditional to Simplified when I was a child learning at weekend 'Chinese School'.

I agree with Mela Bala re PinYin - it's only an aid for pronunciation and helpful for typing Chinese Hanzi into computers.  It's much easier to learn the characters and memorise them as pictures rather than adding an additional piece of information to memorise.

I would be interested to see how you go with learning the Rosetta Stone!
4  BrillKids Software / Tech Support / old version crashing, how do I upgrade? on: May 13, 2011, 05:54:00 AM
Hi.  My LR is ver 1.6.342 ver uk.  I have recently started re-usung it with my DD.  However it freezes after a session of thr uk curriculum ends.  I would like to upgrade it but don't want to lose the data (how many times each word has been shown etc.)  Can I save that info before installing the new version?  thanks, Christine

6  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: My new blog! on: December 20, 2010, 12:34:36 PM
Wow - I am still amazed you have time to blog, look after a new born and teach DD1.  I am impressed that Hubby is writing a blog too as it seems most on childhood learning etc are by mums!

I have enjoyed reading both blogs and look forward to reading future entries!!
7  BrillKids Software / Little Reader 2.0 [BETA] / Re: Tried Little Reader v2.0 [BETA]? Give us your feedback here! on: December 12, 2010, 08:07:06 AM
Has testing of v2.0 finished?  I was advised by the technical support to upgrade to 2.0 because I can't play a file that was sent to me by another member with the version I currently have, 1.6.342 (UK) and it won't open files sent to me by another user (who I presume made them with a US version)

It asks whether to import the file labelled action_words.cat into my Word Library and I say yes with auto resolve naming conflicts.

Then an error message comes up "Cannot find central directory"

Have you tried doing a google search?

I typed in Toddler Enrichment Program and selected sites from Australia.

There are a few other mandarin playgroups/sites in Sydney which are easily found on the doing a google search:

http://www.mandarinstars.com.au/
http://www.nicelearning.com.au/

Alphatykes also are in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne - they start teaching French, Italian and Spanish from babies onwards.  Their programmes are used in other

There are a couple of French ones which are in Melb ....

I had a look at the formatting again - I should ammend terrible to annoying.  The text is fine and when you're reading from your computer it's really is ok.  It's just that the pages don't line up with the pdf pages - so if you were to print it out at home, you'd need to do a little reformatting.
12  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Eguchi Method of Teaching Perfect Pitch on: November 25, 2010, 09:41:30 AM
I don't know how anyone can make the statement of "taking time to look at the method" and then criticising the Eguchi method whent there is very little information available on the internet!  I have trawlled through many pages from google searches and there is not much information available for anyone to critique the method.

Whilst I think HH's method of teaching is very interesting and the videos compelling, it would behove readers to keep OPEN to other techniques of music and pitch (perfect and relative).

I hope that other readers of the forum are not conned by what sounds like HH's sales pitch for Soft Mozart and perhaps subconciously biased opinion - into closing their eyes and ears to other possibilities of teaching children.

I, for one, am hoping TeachingmyToddlers email will be replied to ... and that more information will become available about the technique as people do research and truly fund out what is involved with the method.  I am going to see if I can get ahold of the research paper cited too.
13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Eguchi Method of Teaching Perfect Pitch on: November 24, 2010, 11:21:32 PM
HH - my impression is that they start off with Chords in C major but then progresses to the same chords but in other other scales (sorry I'm not sure of the exact terminology).

So if they can recognise the different between CEGC and DF#AD and correctly identify according to flag or whatever the identification tool is - then isn't that perfect pitch?  Presumably when they are older they will learn that the music convention for the eg red flag is CEGC and the eg. green flag is DF#AD ... therefore that would be perfect pitch.

There is definitely relative pitch learning involved with hearing the individual notes whithin the chords.  But if the child is taught instantly recognise the dfferent chords ad different pitches then is surely by definition perfect pitch??

Having said that I have made an assumption - and perhaps the video is only showing one aspect of the course?

PS  Are you able to post the video that you mentioned?
14  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Vote for PY! 6th Annual Homeschool Blog Award on: November 24, 2010, 08:22:18 AM
PY - that's a shame you didn't win (I did vote!).  I thought your blog was amazing.  It's obviously you put a lot of time and effort you put into creating your educational material which is also amazing.  Congratulations on being a finalist.
15  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Eguchi Method of Teaching Perfect Pitch on: November 24, 2010, 01:06:59 AM
Teaching my Toddler - thanks for emailing the website.  I look forward to hearing the update.

Re: Chordhopper - at the moment my DD is too young to play the computer game.  I think a 2 1/2 to 3 year old would be able to play the game ... anyhow I hope someone will be able to give a review in a few weeks time after their child trials it.  $39 for the download seems quite a reasonable price to pay ... almost tempting to purchase ... but the money could be spent on other educational materials :-)
