BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Sign up for our LR Spanish Beta Testing Program (LIMITED SLOTS ONLY!)

Hola/Hi - I applaud any person and any company who tackles this glaring gap in our country's education - where here in the U.S. we do not teach our young children any second language until middle school. Experts have all agreed for years that the easiest time for children to learn a 2nd language is between birth to five (and at least before age 12). I have a language program that I have shared for years, and I welcome another person (people) in the marketplace to help raise the awareness that our young children CAN and SHOULD learn more than English. Bravo - Boca Beth www.BocaBeth.com

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Mixing languages - multilingual children - when do they stop doing that?

Love your reply in not correcting the child when he makes a mistake and instead modeling the correct way to say it when the opportunity arises.
As a teacher of young children (preschool through elementary school) for more than 15 years I can tell you that the 'mixing' can continue for years. Every child develops at different rates in all areas of learning, and language learning is no exception.
Mixing happens with some adults even! So be patient, smile, and encourage. He will sort it all out in his brain as time continues on.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Colour and languages

Since starting Boca Beth we have tried to always use BLUE for English and RED for Spanish.
I recommend always placing the languages in the same location on your tools. For example, when I take visual learning aids purchased at a store and cut them apart, I laminate the English word on the left side and the Spanish word on the right side every time. Children thrive on knowing what to expect when it comes to their routines.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: The Bilingual Edge - Book Review

Many of my friends and I secretly admit to allowing our little ones to watch DVDs under the age of two. Now granted, I am an older mom now, with my three children between the ages of 11 and 23, but even 'back then' it was frowned upon to plunk little Junior in front of a TV while I ironed or cooked!
I do agree fully with Krista that interaction is the key to the success of any language learning - be it from a CD, a DVD, a book, a game, a fingerplay, and beyond. Young children will learn as long as human interaction is part of the process.
I keep that book (The Bilingual Edge) above my desk, and I travel with it to every workshop I conduct and keynote speech I deliver. I LOVE the message - that we can raise bilingual children even if we as the parent or teacher are not fully bilingual.
