Russian Translation Help Please

We just attended our first class at the local Russian school this morning. I am in over my head to say the least! Everyone else was singing along and I was smiling and clapping cluelessly.   But we want to try and learn, and if you have some spare time I need help. Here are some songs and homework from our first class.

I will try and teach my daughter the words to the songs but I don't know how to pronounce them as we are just now beginning to learn. The LR files are easy because the pronunciation is included. I don't know how close she or I are to saying the words properly though.  Can anyone translate them into "english?" Like for example, яблоко is yablaka....making it easier to learn the pronunciation.

Or better yet,  how can I type these words in online and figure them out myself? I don't know how to create the Russian characters to look them up in Google Translate.  Can you tell I have no idea what I am doing??

How bad is our non-native pronunciation? Be gentle but honest! Can you understand the words or are we really far off? On the bright side, I was sharing early learning with the other mothers in the group and many were interested. Maybe they will be joining the Russian board here soon!

Tonya, no flattery here -- IT IS REALLY GOOD!!! I am impressed    She is so confident and cute. Pronunciation is great, if she would put accent on the right sellable every time you would not notice she has a slight accent. She did very well on most words, and the once she misplaces the accent they just sounded cute, but very understandable. How long were you teaching her Russian? I just noticed our daughters are exactly a year apart to a day, mine was born 1/27/2009, and she is learning her russian words too now.  So neat! Congratulations, GREAT JOB!!!

We started Russian about a month and a half ago I think? I should go back and try to find some posts here and see if I shared when we started. We became a bit more regular with it in the last month though. Thank you for your kind words, it is really encouraging and validating. I will gladly and happily teach any subject I know and share any knowledge I have with my children, but as far as teaching a language I do not speak myself? I have about....oh, I don't know, ZERO confidence in teaching Russian LOL. Until now we have been focusing on Spanish and she can read short books from the library so her skill level is great  for a 2 year old, I wish I had started with the Russian sooner. We recently started *dabbling* in chinese and german too, but I don't know if we have any intention of really delving into it like Spanish & Russian which are my priorities. I am teaching my son as well, but have been focusing in the English & Spanish, I was using my DD as a guinea pig with the Russian , now I feel a bit more confident to start one-on-one flashcards with my son too although he too sees the LR files daily.  My daughter was born 11/28/08 and my son 12/29/09, so our girls are 2 months apart   ....I am going to go fix the typo in my signature now! I was missing a 1 in 11 for November, I thought I fixed that a long time ago but I guess not.

I figured out how to add the Cyrillic alphabet  option to my keyboard and ordered the little stickers for it which should be here in a few days. I will be able to do my own translations (albeit slowly and painfully!) but I feel this will help ME better learn the language as well.

I am trying to source a tutor to come to the house to practice with these items I hope to purchase. I am going to see if any of the other Moms in the Russian class are interested in purchasing from this site, and then they can place the order for me. I always worry about international shipping though and things getting lost and delayed in the mail.

Umnica products are the best, in my opinion. And there are a lot to chose from. Shipping with them is not reliable  , my order got lost twice, and I ended up asking someone to get it for me there locally. I am planning to be in Ukraine in a few months and hoping to get some new materials from them. But if you do not speak Russian yourself, I would say start with their videos. They have excellent series, 5 parts of the video that teaches words and couplets, using Doman method. I have these and we love them.

Okay, this is not going as well as I would have hoped so far.

I just translated the first 2 words of the worksheet with the icon of the bunnies on the right.

 заинъка попляши = zainvka poplyashi (although in the first word, I can't tell if I put the right character in for b or a b with the little tail on top.)

I was expecting it to give me the english word and the Russian pronunciation. Maybe I am just not looking on the right website.

no tail -- its called "miagkij znak" , literally - soft sign, and is used to make letters sound softer ( there are three pronunciation of the consonants - soft, hard and neutral), the one with tail is "tverdij znak" and is used for making letters sound firm, literally called "hard sign" 

And it says, "little rabbit, dance!"

I would also recommend these 5 DVDs - We started to show them when my daughter was 13 months old. She watched about 10 minutes once pr day. And she is soon 2 y.o. but still loves them

The Doman DVDs are wonderful. We're also using them. There are also great Govorim s Pelenok DVD from Umnica (which is the best, I totally agree).

I love Translit.ru for when I need to type up in Russian because it's a transliteration program. I type blindly in English, so typing in Russian is a painful process in comparison. So, you can type in English letters and translit.ru will show corresponding Russian words in Cyrillic. Way cool IMHO.
