Jones Geniuses Math & Reading Programs- Are you interested?

I have some questions about the program.

1) When do you know when the child has reached mastery of each step. For example Step one counting forward and backwards. HAs the child reached mastery when you can show them the dot matrix and they can count forward and backwards by themselves without prompting or do you show them it for a prescribed amount of time for example one month and then move on and not show it anymore or keep showing it every day?

2) Step 2 in the folder is not the same as step 2 on the dvd. In the folder step two is actually step 3 and step 2 is using the number manipulatives to ask the child which number is bigger. Does it matter which way I follow the program or should I follow the DVD which I have been doing?

3) How long should you wait before moving on to the next step?

Dear Kimba,

1)  "When do you know a child has reached mastery of each step?"
That would depend upon the step.  Counting forwards and backwards should be your daily warm-up to any math activity.  It activates that part of the cerebrum which does mathematics.  Children receive little practice in counting backwards and their ability to subtract is consequently worsened.  As for memorizing the dot matrix, once it is done, it is done, and will be used daily in doing math.  You should be able to tell when they can correctly place the dots on the numbers.  Review it if you see they are making mistakes on a particular digit.  Addition and Subtraction steps will proceed until their Matrix Math ribbon is obtained, then continue later as they get Facts Master ribbons.  Multiplication and division we handle in Math Three.

2) Yes, there was a change in the steps.  The official steps are those in the text and folder but it does not matter as long as you don't skip any steps.

3) There is no prescribed time period for the steps because all children are different ages and abilities.  Some finish a step in a day, others in a month, depends upon their mastery of the skill stated which you should be able to assess without any problem.
