Is your Little Reader getting slower over time? Remember to Purge!

Hi everyone!

Today I thought I'd share a quick tip with you guys to help you maximise your Little Reader's efficiency.

Active users of Little Reader may find their computers slowing down over time, as they download and import Categories from the Little Reader Library. The process of importing files, trying the presentations out, and then deciding which ones to keep or throw out may eventually eat into your computer's hard disk space.  To free up some of the wasted space, you should purge the Media Library in Little Reader!

The purge function can be found by going to the FILE menu at the top-left of Little Reader, near the bottom of the menu.  It will be called Purge unused media.  What this function does is automatically detect any images, video or audio remnants of old Categories you have removed from Little Reader, and clean up your Media Library for you!

So remember to periodically take out the trash, you may be surprised how many unused files have accumulated over time.   While working on the new curriculum I definitely felt the difference!

thats a gud one!! thank u so much ..i realise that my LR is getting slower lately. i was about to check the solution @ the forum but before i do, i see ur topic ..thanks to u!! 

if let say, after we purge & the LR is still slow, is there any other way to make it run fast??

Does this function remove only deleted category media or media that hasn't been used in a certain amount of time?  What about if i used something from a cat file that I deleted in a separate new catergory?  I don't want to use something I use only rarely, which is why I have been reluctant to use the feature.  Then again, I am a packrat and have difficulty throwing out magazines I have read, incase I might want to go back and reference an article at a later time.    I could so become one of those weirdos you see on tv that have to follow thru the maze of stacked newspapers to get thru the house if it weren't for my husband throwing things out for me!

It only removes media in your Media Library folder which are not linked to ANY word file.

Ok, so I purged unused media and now several of my categories wont play!  All of the clock time files, chinese- action words, nocturnal creatures are just a few I know for sure won't play.  Nocturnal creature is in my animals folder so it gets used alot and chinese action words is my daughters favorite category so it also gets used alot.  Help please.

Edit:  I am missing media in too many categories to list.   I have browsed my media library and they are not there. grrr.   I did the purge on my computer that I have not upgraded to v1.5 yet.  attached is the error report.

Can you try looking in your Windows Recycle Bin?  LR just deletes the files so they should end up there.

Once you find them, put them back into the Media Library folder.  But this is a very strange problem, and we'd like to look more into it.  Once you retrieve them, can you please PM me as I'd like you to send me some stuff to examine why that happened. Thanks.

I have used purge ever since it was added. I have to use it a lot, and I have never had it delete any media.

My recycle bin is empty except for two short cuts I deleted about a month ago.  Alot of media is missing.  All of the media the dot categories, I think the categories were done by pupisek.  all of the clock categories, in fact I can't find a category other than the ones I have made in the last month that will play.

heyblue, didn't you make a backup copy of your Data and Media Library folders anyway when you upgraded?

If you did, then just copy all the files over to the new Media Library and skip if there's a conflict.

This is on the computer I hadn't upgraded yet so I don't have a backup.  I suppose I could get the media off of the other computer with a jump drive, but I don't think I had all of the categories on both.  At least this time I stil have all teh categories so I know exactly what I am missing.

May I know if I can move the media library from C drive (my document) to a portable drive. As the computer getting very slow. If yes may I know the steps to do it, please?

We definitely do not recommend putting any Little Reader-related files on portable media, as it may damage your lesson library, possibly beyond repair.

She probably lost her files the same way I did, with using something other then the default download where it deleted entire directory. That problem is fixed in latest version. Everyone should make sure they have the latest version. Remember your files you have downloaded are stored in a list under your account and you can just simply download them all again. I know I have done this a few times as I was stupid enough to wipe out my files more then once . If you use the list you don't get charged again for files that cost points.
