Hi Chris (chrisatjonesgeniuses),

I joined the first session but it was 11 PM for me and I am really interested to join other session. Therefore, I was wondering if you could try to organize one session any day in the morning (UTC time). So, I am able to attend it during my day time ;-). I am in Europe (GMT+2).

Thank you in advance,

Regards,
Gilma

I got my kit today! Yeah!!!
Overall Im really happy with it. Two things people should know is, the book based about the letter animals is based on Noah's Ark. So for families that are not Christian this may be an issue for you. This is fine for us as I'm Christian. The only other thing that bugs me a little, in the Animals of the Ark book is written in a way that all the words line up and if one word does not completely fit on a page it is made to by adding a - like in chapter books.
For ex:
There was Amos the
Amiable Ape. Amos looks
mean but he is really the nic-
est, kindest, friendliest ape
 you can image... Really!
I just think while teaching children to read the word should be completed on the same line.
But besides that everything looks great. I'm off to watch the instruction videos!! Usually every night before bed my son and I practice reading. So I'm going to introduce the Matrix Math Manipulatives. Once life is more settled here(Wesleys tutor recently had to resign because her sister is ill, and I had to let go of a daycare child because her behaviors were affecting all my other children) I'm going to try and do way more, but right now I think 15-20mins a day is better then none.

Hi Kizudo

I suspect that the children used this trick when multiplying two-digit numbers with the same first digit, and second digits that sum to 10.

Using their example of 72x78

Take the first digit (7) and multiply it by the next highest number 8

7X8=56

Place 16 (obtained by multiplying the units 2x8) after the above.   5616     Answer is 5616
Some more examples-      21x29= 609  22x28=616  23x27=621  24x26=624   25x25=625
Note 15, 25, 35, 45 etc squared will always end in 25.  Example  35x35=1225

This method only works when the first digits are the same, and the last digits sum to 10. Using this trick enables you to calculate the answer almost immediately.

“The other questions were right as I was leaving:  What is 35 500 squared?  What is 45.5 squared?”

You can use the same trick to square numbers ending in 5 that are larger than 100.

Using their example of 35,500
Start by ignoring the zeros and calculate from 355

Using the same trick   355x355 is now 35x36. You calculate 35x35 as shown above and add 35 to arrive at 1260 to which you attach 25 to get 126025.
126025 is the answer to 355x355, you just need to add 4 zeros to get the answer to 35,500x35,500.

You can calculate the next  example  45.5x45.5 using the same trick.

45x46 and attach 25

45x45=2025 (Calculated almost instantly) and add 45 to get 2070        45X46=2070

Final answer after attaching 25 is 207025. You just need to move the decimal point back to to calculate 45.5x45.5 which equals 2070.25

I hope that you enjoyed this trick.

It appears that the children were asked to calculate carefully selected questions.

Chris.

Water Dreamer- I noted the same thing myself but as a Christian family we are comfortable with Noah's Ark references. I was thinking that a non-Christian family could easily  rip out the first introduction page and the last conclusion page with no ill affect to the book really since the pages are not double sides. Then, judging by the front cover it's just a book with a list of animals that live in a boat LOL.

Also, good observation on the hyphenated word. Missed that one I guess.

Chris,

Fun math tricks!  I wish you were around for my childhood birthday parties!  Who needs a clown when you have math???  LOL

As for they types of questions and whether or not they were carefully selected, I don't know.  I really didn't pay attention to the sheets enough to notice patterns or similarities.

I really would encourage anyone who is interested in this program to schedule their time to fit in at least one of the online classes being offered to observers.  It will clear up many of your questions.  You may find that it is not for you and your child, but you may find it to be a perfect fit with your preferred teaching style and your child's preferred learning style.

Hi Chris (chrisatjonesgeniuses),

Taking into account our time differences (7 hours). I would prefer to join a session between 8 AM to 2 PM, your time (CST = US Central Time)

CST (US Central Time) = CET (Central European Time)
8:00 AM = 3:00 PM
9:00 AM = 4:00 PM
10:00 AM = 5:00 PM
11:00 AM = 6:00 PM
12:00 Noon = 7:00 PM
1:00 PM = 8:00 PM
2:00 PM = 9:00 PM

Thanks in advance for your effort,
Regards,
Gilma

I decided to go ahead and color in my animal mnemonic flashcards with fine tipped markers and did the posters too the match. Then I laminated the cards with contact paper and they look GREAT, colorful and protected. No more fears when my daughter handles and plays with them, at just shy of two she is rough on things.

The contact paper was a lot better to work with than I thought it would be. I am a bit of a perfectionist and very few of them have wrinkles in the laminate, just 2-5 minorly wrinkled cards in the whole set. When I applied it really badly a couple of times, I was able to peel it off and restick without destroying the card. I got the roll at Walmart and it has a the GREEN labeling on the back. I've heard the blue is really awful, don't use it. I paid about $5.67 for the roll I think....to get it laminated at teacher store is about a $1 a foot, so it would have easily been $30-50 to get it all done there, instead it took me almost 1 roll exactly to do the animal cards and the digraphs.

My daughter is definitely getting into the story book pictures and flashcards. I was repeating/singing her phonics in the the rocking chair last night before bed and she started asking for the spiral bound ark book. I let her have it and she was repeating phonics sounds in her bed on the video monitor before dozing off to sleep. Good stuff.

Eight-year-old Veronica Martinez is calculating the cube root of 474,552 in her head.
Veronica continues to ignore the scratch pad in front of her as she moves on to other problems. Like 75,500 squared.  Or the fifth root of 2,887,174,368. (Answer: 78.)

http://www.dallasobserver.com/1997-09-04/news/too-smart-for-their-own-good/

Calculating 5th roots is just another trick which is very easy to perform once you have memorised the Fifth Powers of 0 to 9

Number   Fifth Power   Last Digit
0                 0                        0
1                 1                        1
2                32                       2
3                243                     3
4               1,024                    4
5               3,125                    5              Note how the last digit of every fifth power ends with the original number.
6                7,776                   6
7              16,807                   7
8              32,768                   8
9              59,049                   9

To calculate the Fifth Root you start by ignoring the last five digits of the original question number and choose the memorised fifth power which is just lower (or equal) to this number.
The corresponding fifth root is the first digit of your answer.
The last digit of the question number is also the last digit of your answer.

Using their example 2,887,174,368               Ignoring the last 5 digits gives us 28,871 which falls between the fifth powers of 7 and 8 so our answer is 78.

Some more examples-
Question number     Ignore last 5     Lower 5th power     First Digit     Last Digit     Fifth Root
17210368                   172                     32                            2                   8                    28
418195493                 4181                   3125                         5                   3                    53

Great trick Chris.  smile    I must say, I would still be impressed by an 8 year old figuring it out in her head.  What a fun trick.  smile

Found something on youtube that reminds me of Jones system.
I just got my early curriculum pack and when I saw it I was reminded of these youtube clips.
By a different company. There are several clips by TouchMath1.

Well I got my kit on Thursday like I mentioned before. So far we are working mostly on Math. I will get us going on the reading part in the near future, but for now I feel comfortable with our progress in reading so it's not a rush.
Wesley is already understanding the concept which number is bigger or smaller. Counting to 20 is easy for him, and backwards counting is pretty strong but we just need to work on it a touch more. I'm alittle disappointed the posters are just printed on plain paper. I landed up Mack Tacking one of them because I couldn't stand watching them get wreaked.
So far so good. Excited to see what kind if results we get

Actually just as I pressed post I heard some talking in my sons room. I tiptoed to the door and heard him practicing his backwards counting LOL

I havent started it yet other than counting backwards, but will be laminating posters and flashcards.
The TouchMath website was certainly very expensive. Maybe it's designed to be bought by schools not individuals. They had a few free downloadables.
I did a google search for Touch math pdf cdrom ebook and came up with some helpful free pdfs.
Give google a try.
