nikita- interesting post, you jogged my memory, I think I vaguely remember learning something like that in elementary school! They do have a very "pretty" curriculum, but I cannot IMAGINE spending that kind of money on a program and having to buy a new program or at least portions of a new program every year. Although it seems to have excellent variety and it looks very professional & easy to use, I kind of get hung up on the counting "1" per un-circled dot and  "2" per circled dot versus counting each dot individually in JG. If my daughter was older and could conceptualize that and I was just starting out, I would consider spending the money, but she is not and counting each dot individually at 21 months is much more straight forward. The other thing is that with the manipulatives, DD would have a very hard time placing all of those foam circles with out any way to "lock" them in place, her fine motor skills are just not there yet. It would take a fairly precise hand. But it sure is pretty!!

My "make your own JG manipulatives" project is about half done. And boy is it.....primitive LOL. I got the numerals 0-9 from the craft store, made of wood and about 6 inches high. My husband drilled the holes in them, some of them went all the way through, some didn't. I might have him go back and redrill all of them through, I am kind of a perfectionist and then they will all match. smile I paid about $26 for the wooden numerals and $3 for a bag of golf tee "pegs" from wal-mart. Also bought a can of spray shellac/sealer from walmart for $3-4 and need to buy more paint. I'm not really counting that in the cost though because my DD is always using paint anyway. I figure they will run me about $35 when it's all said and done. I still need to paint each number, I am coloring them to match the flashcards. I copied a second set of flashcards (for personal use only) and colored them in rainbow colors. I have to finish laminating those and they will match the manipulatives. Once she "gets it" I will transition back to plain white flashcards.

Having said that, my daughter loves playing "numbers" and putting the pegs in each wooden number. She thinks it's a great game! I did cut the pegs down very short, we only play this game when my 9 month old son is sleeping b/c they're a total choke hazard. Even for her I guess, but I am right there with her the whole time.  We touch and count the holes in the numbers, touch and  count the pegs after she puts them in, and count the pegs themselves before/after we put them in.  So far it's very effective for hands on learning. My complaint about the numbers I bought (from Michael's craft store) are that 1) the 6 & 9 look the same and 2) the way the font of the numbers are raised up makes it difficult to drill into without splintering the edges and 3) the fonts are not perfectly symmetrical on some of the numbers (8 comes to mind.)

Even so, they are getting the job done and will serve us well. I will post pictures when I am through and they can be the beta version for the users on this forum. LOL.

Hi,
Just an update for those of you that do not know Dr Jones will be doing another presentation this Friday
Sept 17th  5:30 Central. I know this time is not suitable for all of you .We will be doing the next one to suit European time zones.
Spaces are limited so it would be helpful to let me know if you would like to join us by an email to [email protected]

It will include a demonstration by a 4 year old who has been doing Early Learning with us for a little over a year to give you an idea what our courses can do for your childs education.

The link
https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=voffice&password=M.44143CEB7B4589A0C6C2435F328859

We advise that you do a test login right now to make sure that the settings on your computer will not block your entry into the demo.

Click the above link and input your name to login. The virtual demo classroom should begin loading immediately (if it asks you if you want to Save it or Run it, click Run).

If the demo classroom doesn't load, look closely again at your login screen - you may have a message from your antivirus software at the top saying that it is blocking you from downloading the file (in this case just right click the message and allow the download). If you continue to have problems getting into the classroom, you may need to adjust the settings on your firewall or antivirus software, or call technical support at 866-388-8674.

We are looking forward to having you at our Amazing Demonstration and Program Introduction

Regards,

Chris Willsden

Is Numicon similar to the Jones Geniuses Maths system?

I don't think they are really similar just briefly looking at the second video. I really wanted the pegs ON the numbers, not alongside of them, which is why I opted to make my own so they would match the JG flashcards. The JG system includes a list of 10 systematic skills to build the proper foundation in math before moving on to the next level. Judging by the matrix dot system alone, I would consider it more similar to touch math.

My daughter learns songs pretty quickly (she could do hand motions and mumble along to the preamble after just a week or two although her vocabulary is still not 100%). She has her counting 1-10 verbally down pretty good, so we are working on 11-20 and back down again.

I racked my brain trying to think  of a good tune to sing 0-20 to, so far the best I could come up with is Mary had a Little Lamb. DD is really enjoying it and starting to sing along. Yes, it's a bit silly, but it will surely help her memorization. I really need to invest in a floor number line too. I hyphenated the numbers that kind of run together a bit.  If you use a different song or can think of a different song to use, do share!

Mary had a little lamb / little lamb / little lamb
zero-one, two, three, four, five / six, seven, eight / nine-ten, eleven, twelve

Mary had a little lamb / It's fleece was white as snow....twenty!
thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen / seventeen, eighteen, nineteen....twenty!

Everywhere that Mary went / Mary went / Mary went,
Twenty-nineteen, eighteen, seventeen / sixteen, fifteen / fourteen, thirteen

Everywhere that Mary went / the lamb was sure to go....zero!
twelve, eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven, six /  five, four, three, two, one....zero!

Numicon sounds like a good idea. And easy to make your own shapes. it's great to have a variety of manipulatives like cuisinaire rods etc.
Because the number 3 isnt really 3 the numeral three but 3 spots, or dots, fingers, apples, grapes or counters. The numeral 3 represents that.
I will incorporate the numicon idea into our learning. Thanks Chris.

Twin Sisters has a counting CD that has two songs on it that go to 20.  Very catchy. I like these two. We frequently sing them in the car.  My son has even started playing his ukelele and singing them.  I can't say that I, personally, like the entire CD as it seems somewhat repetitive, but I suppose that's a good thing for my son's learning.  He likes it and he's learning...too bad if I get bored.

Ok, so I have taken some time to process what I heard this evening.
- Its really encouraging to me that Kara's son Buck went from a very early reader to *poof* almost overnight a great reader. This helped me realize we need to keep trucking and one day it will just click. I'm noticing with my son, he may struggle with a concept for a long time, then suddenly one day just get it.
- If you guys are looking for some Read With Me Books, one of the companies I'm doing a review on sells a 80pack of books for $20, some of them are early readers, some of them are parent/child books, and some of them are chapter books. They are designed to follow certain lessons and they are not flashy at all(black and white coloring book style) but for my son they are some of his favorite early readers. http://www.headsprout.com/catalog/index.cfm?event=MiniSproutStories_DetailPage
So far I thank this program for his recent improvement in reading.
- I really like how they have the exceptions to the rules grouped together.
- I have to email Dr.Jones or Chris and ask what I should do about Math U See. We are doing lesson 21 out of 30. BUT at this point we are doing
_+3=5
Up till now everything was flowing really nice for us, I mean we finished 2/3 of the curriculum in less then 5 months, however this stuff is just not sitting with him right. And after listening to Dr. Jones, I believe we are missing SEVERAL steps...
Anyhow! Thats what my thoughts are on today.

I missed it again bummer.

I have some questions though.

Does the maths program require you to enrol in the on line classes? Or can you teach it from the materials supplied?
How relgious is the program?
How much time a day is required to make the early program work? My two year old is very busy and there is no way I could get her to sit still for a more than 5 minutes.
Do you ship to Australia?
Im very interested in getting this program for my daughter and for my baby when he/she arrives.

Hi Kimba,
To answer your questions:
You can do the curriculum only option & achieve your aims.
We do have secular options in the courses if requested.
All children have different levels of attention span, 5 mins is OK to start with, as the learning skills develope more time can be spent on the curriculum. We have children as young as 18 months starting our Early Learning.
Yes we do ship to Australia,  in fact anywhere in the world   $ 55 shipping costs to Australia.

So, it's been a little more than a week since I started doing the math matrix with Ella. Since she had just turned 2 recently, I had been trying to think of ways to make the method more "hands-on" for her to help her more easily memorize the dot placement on the numbers. She is only starting to learn how to grip a pencil and won't be able to copy the dots onto the numbers for quite a while. I considered making the wooden numbers with pegs following LilyandOwensMoms instructions but couldn't find suitable wooden numerals. I finally stumbled onto this idea that is working really well with my sticker-obsessed toddler. I copied the number outlines (the blank ones without the dot matrix) onto cardstock and covered them with contact paper. Then I gave Ella a sheet of smiley face round stickers and asked her to stick them onto the numbers to match the dot patterns on the dot matrix numbers. Since the cardstock is protected by contact paper, I basically just peel off the stickers after she is done and re-use them again the next day. For the past several days, I had the dot matrix flashcards out so she can copy the pattern. Today, I walked in on her making the matrix on the blank numbers from memory! It appears she has memorized the dot placements for numbers 1-6 after just a few days of working with the dot stickers! I am so surprised and happy I just wanted to share this method just in case there are parents out there doing the math matrix with kids who can't write or hold a pencil yet.  big grin
