I am going to start with continents first, if that goes well, I will move on to oceans later, if someone else wants to do it first, that is fine too.

I have never made anything like this before, so a little guidance would be good. Off the top of my head, for each of the 7 continents

1. How many countries on it
2. Population
3. Major city/cities
4. Highest point
5. Lowest point

Then I get a little stuck. How about...
6. Native species
7. Major exports? or economic information?
8. Interesting random fact
9. Religion?
10. Weather

In a perfect scenario, we could make these files as large as we want with 10 separate pictures for each magnitude (so in this case, 70 pictures in all).  And, all of the facts would be randomly mixed up for each presentation. It would get pretty boring to listen to the numbers of populations 7 times in a row, even if they did have interesting pictures of the native people. Know what I mean? Is there a way to random misx up the entire file like that (I think there is, but I could be wrong)?

We could hash out and finalize EK topics and the facts accompanying each topic on the EK board (or dedicated board), and once done, BrillKids will get the voice recordings done and source most of the pictures/videos (we may need some help there though).

I think KL is going to have everything voice recorded, maybe I misunderstood this incorrectly?

LilyAndOwensMom,
What I understand about EK is that in the category (Continents) you present maximum (with exceptions) 10 pictures. In this case would be 7.
Each picture (continent) has on the back 10 facts (those that you mention).
I do not see how you will have 70 pictures.

Maybe if you want to show more information make a category of a country and show 10 pictures (ethnics, important sites, etc) but i do not see how you can obtain 10 facts of them.

What a fantastic response from everyone!

Will definitely open up a board on this very soon.

This is what I suggest:

1. A dedicated board named "EK Categories Development Community" board;

2. For each EK topic, we open up a separate topic. Probably should have a special header for such topics like "EK Cat: [Topic name]" to help easily distinguish from general discussion topics.

3. Kreena and Waterdreamer to be the first 2 moderators of the board (thanks for volunteering!). Any one else wanting to volunteer for this or other roles, please either post here or PM me/Lap.

4. You guys should sort out what Categories you want to produce, who will lead it, etc. until you have a final version.  At that point, BrillKids (Lap, Kezia, or me) should be notified, then we will begin the production process (though we may wait for a few to be ready first so that we can do them in bulk).  We will primarily do the voice recordings and create the final .cat files.  We will also provide whatever pictures we can get from our picture suppliers, though we would expect that you guys should do most of this.

Regarding LR capability, you can add as many picture and pic audio files as you want.  The problems are:

1. File size, as Nikki mentioned, which may make the final .cat file massive to download.  Since many people may not find bandwidth to be a big problem, I think we should play by ear on this, and see how big the files get. Obviously, we should try to reduce the size of the files to a minimum.

2. Current LR does not allow linking specific pictures to specific picture audio.  I think this is crucial for EK categories, and this is a feature that is planned for LR in a future release.  It won't make it to v2.0 (which we are working on now and hope to get out next month), but we plan to add this feature in v2.1, along with a subtitles/commentary feature.

For now, I would suggest that we work on the categories on the assumption that we have the the pic/pic-audio linking feature, so that each fact can go with a dedicated picture if necessary.  Creating the assets for the categories will take time anyway, and we will raise the priority of this feature so that it's higher up on our to-do list.

Stay tuned for our new board!  In the meantime, please continue the discussion here.

Thanks KL! That sounds great!
I can commit to
Marine Life Vol 1,2,&3
Insects Vol 1,2,3
Composers Vol 1
Canadian  provience and territories
I can probably do more, I just don't want to over commit LOL
I have tons of flashcards with the facts already there, it's just a matter of turning them to point form and finding more pictures.

LilyAndOwensMom,

Just as 2010BEBES said,
for a category/topic we will have max 10 pics(+/-3) and max 100 facts.
i.e. 10 facts per pic. (For some pic we may have less than 10 facts)
also we may have less than 10 pics in a topic.

If some one is collecting for animals we will have animals vol 1,2,3
each EK files having 10 animals covered.

If one has collected just 4/5 facts, we can get when we discuss the topic.

I think we should have these prototypes at one place. Waterdreamer can you
please work on this. If you want to discuss anything you can PM me.

-- Kreena.

yes I think the plan was to update the poi that are already done(making sure they have enough facts and possible getting them professionally records) with the creations permission.
We are waiting for KL and Lappy to create a board especially for this project. So yes I believe we would post them on the board so others can make suggestions or make corrections to the facts.

I'm almost done with one of my projects, as Kreena suggested I'll post it as an example. I have a function to go to tonight but tomorrow my bf is working and my son has gone to the lake with his dad(I hate when he's gone all weekend) Sad. I'll try and get it up for tomorrow. Basically I'll try and set it up how we would suggest it be posted onthe new board. Then we can see if there is a better way.

I am SOOOO glad to see this finally happen.  Its been just about exactly 2 years since I first approached KL about using LR for EK.  My first file was so large I couldn't upload it.  It was the Great Inventors EK file.  I have uploaded several more EK files since then.  I would love to have my files professionally done!  Ten facts for each picture is the right amount.  My thoughts are that the important thing is that each category facts follow the same order, ie for insects fact 1 is always diet, fact two is always where they live, fact three is always size and so on.  This way when someone else does a second set the information is presented in the same order.  And each set should only contain upto 10 bits.

I agree, my Ek also follow those standards.

I am really excited about this, the files I created a year or so ago in the encyclopedic knowledge weekly collaboration group each have 10 facts and there were many, many of those.  Maybe KL can start with those?  I think each has 10 facts for each picture. I am more than willing to help with further collaboration, but there are a lot of those to start with.

I also wouldn't mind helping as a moderator as this is a major passion of mine. When we were doing this a year ago (not as little reader files) we pretty much followed a lot of Doman's suggestions.

These are his DIVISION suggestions.

1. Mathematics
2. Art
3. Geography
4. Literature
5. Language
6. Science
7. Biology
8. Music
9. Human Physiology
10. History

Then each division has 10 (or more categories). For example for music:

1. Musical Instruments
2. Musical Notes
3. Musical Symbols
4. Great Composers
5. Musical Intervals
6. Musical Chords
7. Great Singers
8. Great Performers
9. Ancient Musical Instruments
10. Musical Phrases

Then within each category you create a set (for example woodwind or brass instruments)
Then each set contains the actual BITS with the programs of intelligence (POIs)

Here is an example for Musical Instruments:

Division: Music
Category: Musical Instruments
Set: Type of Instrument
Bit of Intelligence: Name
1st Magnitude: Type of instrument.
2nd Magnitude: Specific information about the type of instrument.
3rd Magnitude: How is the instrument played?
4th Magnitude: Specific information about how the instrument is played.
5th Magnitude: Parts of the instrument.
6th Magnitude: Specific information about a part of the instrument.
7th Magnitude: Where did the instrument originate?
8th Magnitude: What was the instrument's first role?
9th Magnitude: A further role of the instrument (may be associated with a famous figure in music).
10th Magnitude: The modern role of the instrument (in the orchestra or in some other area).

So what I would do for each set is create a basic template (like above) filled in up to set name then copy and paste it 10 times. Chose the names of the 10 bits you'd like (maybe 10 instrument names) and then fill those in and then it is just filling in the blanks on the template you've already created.  Then look for a picture of each bit. I like wikimedia as it is all free content and thus no copyright laws are being violated by using the images.

I've made a ton of cards, so I have a lot of content I could post when the new board is created.

Sorry for so long of a post.

Linzy- You seem to be a pro at this! Could you give me some feedback on the Geography-Continents file I am trying to put together? I am just not sure if what I listed is the right kind of information and I don't want to go through all the work if it's not quite what the board is looking for.
