196  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Hooked on Phonics for 2.5 year old (or the next step after letter sounds) on: May 09, 2010, 03:18:24 PM
Hello,  I used this program with both of my children now ages 6 and 4 .   I can not say enough good things about it ... I know you have to pay for it but it is worth every penny....   http://www.readinglesson.com/

We also use/ used    www.starfall.com   (free site)

This site also has a FREE phonics program to grade 2 I think   http://www.lessonpathways.com/ ( we love this site and use it all the time for all subjects)  you do have to register but everything is FREE......

Hey guys:
I was wondering how early you would start either discovery education DVDs or lesson pathways.  My little one is 14 mo and is enjoying TW and leap frog phonics as well as doman math bits and reading but don't want to start anything too early or go backwards! Any suggestions,
Thanks

197  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Stanford Binet IQ test to get into kindergarten on: May 02, 2010, 08:52:53 PM
Greetings all:
I just came across this link and thought this forum might be interested.  I found it interesting how much importance schools put on such tests.  this is about the KBIT test.  i believe this child is smart, but after this test the school doesnt' think so. this is a perfect example of why it is important to know about such tests and how to fight for your child to get them into a gifted program.
hope you guys find this interesting,
the doc

http://www.brainy-child.com/experts/KBIT-2-test-scores.shtml

here is the text:

Q:  I have a daughter in the first grade. She is seven years old, and she said that "its boring in the classroom". I noticed to the school after I got a advice from after care personnel. She took a KBIT (which she did not know it was a test), and this is a test result:

Verbal knowledge Riddles Verbal
         27                      20                = 47 >>>>>>>111

Matrices Nonverbal
  33                                                = 33 >>>>>>>125

IQ composite   236 >119

The CST call me for conference, and finally they said that my daughter is scored 119 on the KBIT-2, and the CST is not recommending gifted evaluation at this time.

How to improve the KBIT-2 test? Thanks in advance.

A: Firstly, a brief overview of what the KBIT-2 is. The Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Second Edition (K-BIT 2) is used to measure verbal and nonverbal cognitive ability. It is used to obtain a quick estimate of intelligence, estimate an individual's verbal versus nonverbal intelligence and/or to screen to identify students who may benefit from enrichment or gifted programs. Additionally, this test is also able to identify high-risk children through large-scale screening who may require a more comprehensive evaluation. This test is developed by leading cognitive ability experts Alan and Nadeen Kaufman, therefore, it is assumed that this test provides highly valid, reliable results and is useful for a broad range of purposes.

Based on a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15, your daughter scores are a little above average (about 85-115 should be within the average range on a bell curve). This means an overall score of 119 places him in the top 15% of performances (may not be enough for a gifted program admission). You may need to get the school to discuss the scores with you to find out areas that needs enrichment to make a more informed decision on catering for his learning needs. If the school decided that the scores do not meet the criteria for a gifted program, they may have their reasons for doing so which they should explain to you. Most schools have multiple criteria for admission into the gifted program and IQ scores are usually well above average for students to benefit most from such programs.

There is no specific way to increase the test score for K-BIT-2, but in general there are some methods that can be used. Practice makes perfect, so test practice may help the child be more comfortable with tests due to familiarity. Psychological factors also influence test taking to a certain extent so a child should be least anxious and nervous about taking any test. Sometimes parent expectations make children very anxious and affect the results. Physiological factors such as not getting enough sleep and fatigue can influence a child’s ability when answering test questions, especially intelligence tests that requires brain work. In short, anything that stimulates the brains - (reading activities, exploring, discovering, music, stimulating games, creative art, etc) would sure give one’s brain a boost.

Here is a website is quite interesting and offers a ways to boost your IQ.

Having said that, the increase may not be very significant for everyone. These tests are meant to screen some children who are assumed to require special programs to cater for their intellectual needs. A child, who is “forced” into such programs without having the right pre-requisites, may suffer educationally. For example, a child with border-line results is rejected entry but forceful parents practically plead to the school for an opportunity for their child - the child may not benefit fully from the program and may drop out, much to the frustration of both the child and parents. This is the same as other special children with learning disability who need a special program to cater for their learning needs but a normal child would surely not benefit form these special programs.

Therefore, by all means help your daughter with the test preparation but bear in mind that the school has set criteria for selecting students in such programs and selection is made quite carefully by a team of teachers and/or professionals. Best of luck!
198  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: New Italian Bit Community on Facebook on: April 28, 2010, 11:40:45 PM
They are CD roms that play on a pc or a mac and are basically flashcards.  however, they are in 5 different languages, including italian.  so there are 15-17 subjects on each CD (10 bits each) and there are 10 CDs, so that is a lot of information.  i bet you could crack it to print it, but as it stands you can't print.  there are kids on over 100 subjects that all you have to do it glue them onto a bit card.  i just found this out.  call the gentle revolution press and they will send you a catalog.  its nice b/c you don't have to hunt around to find images and information to make your bits.  this stuff is not online in the store so you will have to call.  we're going through the CDs in english first, then i'll go to italian.    i also have some italian flashcards i've been doing which is AMAZING!  she recognizes all kinds of words in italian.  i just wish there were more flashcards with more subjects out there, especially verbs.  to me, that is the problem with language program for kids.  they all start at the beginning:  colors, some numbers, simple items.  what are you suppose to do after that?  it is frustrating!

199  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: YBCR v LR? on: April 27, 2010, 11:53:23 PM
I can tell you that YBCR is a great place to start.  but once you've completed the program, you're kind of stuck.  by then, i'm sure LR will be available for mac.  if you are going to buy anything off of Craig's List, make sure you don't just get copies of the DVDs, but  get all of the flashcards and books as well.  they are really important.  another thing that has been discussed on the forum is the leap frog phonics DVD.  its a great thing to introduce around the 3rd DVD of YBCR.  a good combo before LR.  i'm going to break down and get LR and use my husband's PC b/c i don't want to partition my hard drive.  lots of problems running windows like that on a mac and i don't want to repeat that!
good luck!

203  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Nature study dismissing brain training games for adults. on: April 21, 2010, 10:45:13 PM
i have heard that doing exercises using opposite hand/leg really help connect right and left brain.  i had a friend who had a stroke and lost almost all of her mobility, but got a lot of it back by doing these exercises.  i don't know if it will make you smarter, but keeping both sides of your brain working can't be a bad thing.  keep old age away for as long as you can, right?
thanks for the info!

204  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Mac, Linux, 64-bit Windows users - Please raise your hands! on: April 21, 2010, 03:33:31 PM
REALLY NEED A MAC VERSION FOR BOTH LR AND LM!!!
what's up with that?  tried that wrap around that your tech support told me and it crashed my computer (i'm running 10.5+ w/intel).  for whatever reason it doesn't like it.

how about being able to run in classic mode OS9?  i have some doman CD roms that are able PC based but to run in classic OS 9 mode and they run perfectly.  would that be an easier fix?
let us know SOON... will buy everything once its compatible, but my child is not getting any younger so hurry up ;-)

205  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: YBCR v LR? on: April 21, 2010, 03:19:55 PM
hey gang:
well, we've blown through YBCR.  i started my daughter at 4 mo. but i only played them 1x/day b/c they are SOOO long. we finished in 5 -6 mo.   but she really loves them so i still do it every once in a while.  i would like to sell my DVD and the books that go with them.  we're still using the flashcards, though.  i taped  italian words over the english words and then show the picture.  works like a charm.  why keep making flashcards from scratch, right?
i'm going to do that with other languages as well.
LR sounds great but they don't play on a MAC without some crack program... and i'm not sure i want to do that.  still debating.  does not work on a PS3 either.  that would be great b/c then you could play it on the TV screen.  maybe soon.
anyone have luck using LR on a mac?  would it work in classic mode OS9?
thanks!

you are so right shenLi!  the problem is that the test you take in kindergarten, it follows you around until you are in HS here in the US so if something doesn't go well, or you have a lousy test administrator, or your child is sick and this is the only day you can take it, or something happened at home with the dog, forget it!  and sometimes you can't avoid taking it.  however, if you can, i would avoid it as long as possible OR try to find out what they test and practice.  in my opinion, if i have to play this stupid game, then 2 can play at that game and i'm going to prepare my child as best i can.  right?

I think tinges on the wall are great!  There is a store of the Russian who won the feilds prize some time ago. Her family was so poor that they papered The walls of her room with pages of math books and she figured it out! She learned math from beginning to calculus reading from her walls  True story. Einstein spent his young years looking though he family's subscription of science magazines and that is how he learned about physics. You are on the right track!

Thanks again!
